Core Idea¶

Nation language is both an analytic and political-literary concept, emphasizing sound, performance, tidalectics, code plurality and colonial power; its application depends on speaker community, island, text, period and Brathwaite's evolving formulation. Writers and performers draw on community speech, rhythm, syntax, phonology, oral genres and African-Caribbean histories, inscribe or voice them in literary work, and contest metropolitan standards that would erase their autonomous form.
