Natural nuclear fission reactor¶
A uranium-rich geological deposit in which naturally supplied fissile concentration, moderation, geometry, and water conditions once sustained intermittent nuclear chain reactions without human construction.

The Oklo deposits are identified through uranium depletion and fission-product isotope anomalies and constrain geologic transport, reactor cycling, nuclear constants, and long-term radionuclide retention. At an earlier higher natural U-235 abundance, groundwater moderated neutrons within suitably concentrated ore; heating displaced water and reduced reactivity, cooling restored it, producing bounded cycles recorded in isotopic inventories.
