Core Idea

Net domestic product equals GDP minus consumption of fixed capital for the same domestic economy and period. It estimates production remaining after measured wear and obsolescence of fixed assets, not after every social or environmental cost. GDP counts current domestic production whether it expands capacity or merely replaces depreciated capital. GDP counts current domestic production whether it expands capacity or merely replaces depreciated capital.

Scope of Application

NDP applies in national accounting when GDP and consumption of fixed capital share one domestic, temporal, and valuation frame. Use NDP only with harmonized GDP/CFC geography, period, price, asset, and depreciation conventions, and avoid presenting it as comprehensive welfare.

  • National accounts. Reports net domestic production.
  • Capital maintenance analysis. Separates replacement requirement from gross output.
  • Growth decomposition. Compares gross and net production trends.
  • Cross-country comparison. Requires harmonized CFC and price conventions.
  • Policy interpretation. Qualifies GDP growth driven by replacement activity.

Clarity

The subtraction identifies the precise meaning of net: net of measured fixed-capital consumption, not net of every social cost. It prevents replacement spending, depreciation, and net investment from being treated as interchangeable quantities. The closest near miss sets the boundary: Net national product is the closest near miss: it nets capital consumption from national rather than domestic production and therefore changes the residence boundary.

Manages Complexity

Millions of production transactions and heterogeneous capital assets become two compatible aggregate flows. The compression is useful only because asset lives, prices, and depreciation conventions remain documented behind the headline residual. The central gross activity–capital maintenance tradeoff is this: GDP includes production devoted to replacing used capital; NDP removes it but relies on estimates. A second comparability–model dependence tension matters because Harmonized totals aid comparison while depreciation depends on asset lives and prices. The net production–wellbeing tension adds that NDP is narrower than GDP yet still omits many welfare dimensions.

Abstract Reasoning

Use three linked moves: select GDP for the domestic economy, period, and price basis; obtain consumption of fixed capital under the same accounts and conventions; subtract CFC once and verify revisions and units. As a collapse test, the case exits when geography, period, price basis, or depreciation convention is mismatched, or when the result is presented as comprehensive welfare. A fourth check is to compare gross and net growth without inferring a cause from the gap alone. A final check is to keep welfare and unmeasured capital depletion outside the accounting claim.

Knowledge Transfer

The gross-minus-capital-consumption operation transfers across national accounts with harmonized definitions. It does not transfer to a company by merely subtracting tax depreciation, and 'net output' elsewhere needs its own boundary. No canonical parent prime is currently asserted; broader structural comparisons remain related-prime analogies until separately adjudicated in the DAG. Matched conventions make the subtraction meaningful. CFC is the required deduction rather than the whole concept.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space

Net domestic product sits in a crowded region of the domain-specific corpus (32nd percentile for distinctiveness): several abstractions share nearly its structure, so a description that fits it tends to fit its neighbors too.
