Recognise that a newly introduced stimulus draws an elevated response tied to its recency, not its intrinsic worth, which decays near-exponentially toward a steady-state baseline — so short-window evaluation systematically over-estimates the intervention's lasting effect.
Core Idea¶
The novelty effect is the regularity that a new stimulus, tool, or intervention produces an elevated response — in attention, engagement, or performance — that decays toward a baseline as its recency fades, along a near-exponential course over hours to weeks. The structural commitment is that this transient component is causally tied to newness, not intrinsic properties; the steady-state a stimulus deserves is visible only after novelty decays. The mechanism is behavioral habituation, and its signature confound is that short-window measurement over-estimates intrinsic effect.

Naming the effect converts a recurring evaluation failure into a known confound: a tool posting strong first-semester gains that fade by year three is not conflicting evidence but a single decay curve sampled at different points, dissolving the disagreement into the prediction that effect size falls with study duration. The sharper move is the decomposition it forces — every observed response splits into a recency-tied transient and an intrinsic steady-state, and only the second drives the deployment decision. The practitioner's question becomes crisp: has the novelty decayed, or am I still reading the orienting response?

The literature is a sprawl of unrelated-seeming deployment disappointments, each inviting a bespoke story.
