Core Idea¶
The One Standard German Axiom is Stefan Dollinger's critical label for an alleged presupposition in parts of German dialectology and standard-language modeling: that one dominant Standard German, associated especially with Germany, is the sole or superior reference norm and that national Austrian, Swiss, or other standard varieties are secondary or insufficiently autonomous. It is an analytic accusation about model architecture and norm legitimacy, not a formally adopted axiom of linguistics or a proposition accepted by all scholars.
The diagnosis examines how research design chooses reference corpora, labels variants, assigns codification authority, and interprets cross-border differences. If Germany-based usage silently supplies the neutral baseline while other national standards appear as deviations, the framework can reproduce monocentric legitimacy even while acknowledging regional variation.
Scope of Application¶
