Operational Pause¶
Deliberately halt active operations while still able to continue — trading present momentum for restored sustainment and a replan — timed to fall before the culminating point, past which recovery becomes impossible.
Core Idea¶
An operational pause is a deliberate, temporary halt in active operations while the force still retains the capacity to continue, taken to restore sustainment, reorganize, or replan. Its defining feature is that it is chosen, not imposed by defeat. In doctrine (JP 3-0) it is the instrument for managing the approach to the culminating point — the moment beyond which sustaining capacity can no longer support forward action. Taken before that point it is recoverable; forced past it, it may not be.
Scope of Application¶
The operational pause lives within military doctrine and campaign planning, as the instrument for managing the approach to culmination; the deliberate-recovery-interval pattern recurs far afield but travels through parent primes, not the doctrinal label.

Clarity¶
Naming a halt an operational pause makes legible that stopping can be a chosen act of command rather than an admission of failure, converting "we had to stop" into "we chose to stop, and here is what we bought." Its sharper work fixes the pause against the culminating point, reframing the planning question from "are we still advancing?" to "how close is our sustainment margin to the point of no return?" — since forward progress lags depletion by days or weeks.
Manages Complexity¶
The open, continuously re-argued question "when should we halt and recover?" collapses to filling four slots: an entry condition, defined interval activities, an exit condition, and a duration. The deeper compression fixes the pause against the culminating point, reducing a high-dimensional sustainment picture to one tracked quantity — the margin to the point of no return — and a binary that reads off it: recoverable pause versus forced culmination failure.
