Optical contact bonding

Prepared optical glass surfaces join at a selected closely conforming interface through direct attraction without a cured adhesive interlayer.

Core Idea

Optical contact bonding joins prepared optical glass surfaces at a selected close-fitting region through direct attraction, leaving no cured adhesive layer at that interface.[ref-933107f984c4][ref-2d966bda3e3f] The input is two separate prepared components; the output is their joined assembly. Wade describes a prism assembly attached to a fused-silica breadboard by optical contact.[^ref-933107f984c4] Fang describes a coverslip first contacted to a drilled window and then strengthened by a separate anneal.[^ref-2d966bda3e3f] The initial contact does not inherit every property of the later annealed joint.

Scope of Application

Two unlike reported assemblies show the process; the bullets distinguish the contacted interface and its stage within each:

  • Prism-to-breadboard joint: Wade's assembled prisms contact a polished fused-silica board directly.[^ref-933107f984c4]
  • Prism alignment interval: Wade uses temporary methanol to delay closure while positioning that same joint; the intended direct contact forms after evaporation.[^ref-933107f984c4]
  • Coverslip-to-window joint: Fang initially contacts a thin coverslip to a drilled fused-silica window by reported van der Waals attraction.[^ref-2d966bda3e3f]
  • Aperture region and later stage: The selected glass-to-glass region surrounds the open hole; Fang attributes covalent bonding and vacuum tightness to a subsequent anneal, not the initial contact alone.[^ref-2d966bda3e3f]

These are two whole cases viewed at different interfaces and stages, not four independent experiments.

Clarity

Name the exact surfaces before naming their bond. Wade glues mirrors to prisms with epoxy but optically contacts the prism assemblies to the board.[^ref-933107f984c4] A methanol alignment layer is temporary, not a cured adhesive carrying the final joint.[^ref-933107f984c4] Fang's drilled aperture is open space; the coverslip contacts the surrounding window surface.[^ref-2d966bda3e3f] A later vacuum-tight annealed state should not be credited to the earlier van der Waals contact by itself.[^ref-2d966bda3e3f]

Manages Complexity

Track preparation, the selected contact area, direct attraction, and the joined adhesive-free interface. Surface flatness and local roughness are separately measured in related glass-bonding work.[^ref-7ee5ce3065fa] Their numbers do not by themselves establish the completed joined area or strength. Wade's test-flat fringe illustration informs a particular contact assessment, not a universal strength test for every prism joint.[^ref-933107f984c4] The four roles avoid treating one cleaning recipe, alignment aid or acceptance measurement as mandatory in every instance.

Abstract Reasoning

Classify a joint at a specified interface and time. If prepared glass surfaces come close enough over the selected region and the resulting attachment is due to direct interface attraction, the process fits. A persistent spacer or a cured epoxy layer carrying that joint defeats the classification. Fang reports initial optical contact before annealing; the later covalent state is a further change rather than proof that all initial contacts are vacuum-tight.[^ref-2d966bda3e3f]

Knowledge Transfer

The input-to-output Transformation maps Wade's separate prism assembly and board into an attached assembly.[^ref-933107f984c4] It also maps Fang's separate coverslip and window into an initially contacted assembly.[^ref-2d966bda3e3f] Glass identity remains while the attachment relation changes. The source cases differ in alignment aid, geometry and later treatment without requiring these differences in every optical contact. Interface and Coupling are neighboring comparisons, but close surfaces alone do not establish their full roles or this specific adhesive-free glass join.

  • Optical contact bonding is a kind of Transformation Prime

Optical contact bonding is a physical transformation of prepared separate glass components into an adhesive-free joined assembly under a direct-contact rule.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space

Optical contact bonding sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (98th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
