Organon Model¶
Analyze one communicative sign through its simultaneous relations to sender, addressee, and objects or states of affairs—as symptom/expression, signal/appeal, and symbol/representation—while allowing their relative dominance to vary.
Core Idea¶
The Organon Model is Karl Bühler's functional-semiotic model of the linguistic sign. It treats a concrete communicative sign as an instrument situated in a four-role field: a sender produces a materially perceptible sign for a receiver while communicating about objects or states of affairs. The sign is related to each of the three exterior terms in a different semantic function. Relative to the sender it is a symptom whose expression discloses something about the sender; relative to the receiver it is a signal whose appeal can orient the receiver's attention or behavior; relative to objects and states of affairs it is a symbol whose representation makes a world-content available.
Scope of Application¶
The home domain is the functional theory of language, where the model organizes inquiry into how linguistic forms serve communicative functions. It applies at the level of words, clauses, prosody, utterances, speech actions, and extended discourse when the analyst can identify a sign-event and its participants and content. It is especially useful for separating formal features that contribute to reporting or reference from those that express stance or direct an addressee.
Clarity¶
The model clarifies an utterance by replacing the vague question “what does this message mean?” with three controlled questions. What does the sign manifest about its producer? What does it ask, invite, or cause the addressee to do? What objects or states of affairs does it present? A single wording can then be analyzed without forcing all meaning into reference.
Manages Complexity¶
Communicative artifacts contain many simultaneous variables: lexical reference, syntax, prosody, voice quality, gesture, typography, participant relation, practical aim, and situational context. An analyst who treats these as an undifferentiated list can describe detail without explaining its work. The Organon Model compresses that space into three functionally directed bundles.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The model licenses a repeatable analytic procedure:
- Delimit the concrete sign-event and its medium. 2. Identify sender, actual or projected receiver, and the object/state-of-affairs domain. 3. Map evidence for the expression/symptom relation: stance, identity, affect, social position, or other source-linked information. 4. Map evidence for the appeal/signal relation: requested action, attention direction, behavioral orientation, warning, invitation, or uptake sought. 5. Map evidence for the representation/symbol relation: entities, properties, events, and relations conventionally presented.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within linguistics the same role map transfers from face-to-face speech to writing, institutional notices, recorded media, and multimodal texts. In each case there is a producer position, an actual or projected receiver, a sign vehicle, and a represented domain. A diary entry can project an addressee even when no present hearer exists; a public notice can institutionalize the sender position; a recorded announcement can preserve appeal after its producer is absent. What transfers is the tri-relational mechanism, not necessarily a literal conversational scene.
