Overcoding¶
The qualitative-research failure mode where coding fragments material below the phenomenon's legibility grain, actively severing the sequence and relational structure that gave coded phrases their meaning — diagnosed by whether meaning can be reconstructed from the codes alone.
Core Idea¶
Overcoding is the qualitative-research failure mode in which an analyst, pursuing rigour through decomposition, fragments transcripts into so many fine-grained codes that the relational, sequential, and narrative structure of the phenomenon is destroyed. Its commitment is that some phenomena are legible only at a grain larger than a single code — an emotional arc, a trust-building sequence — so decomposing below that grain actively severs the connective tissue, not merely loses detail. Ironically, rigour culture rewards ever more codes.

Clarity¶
Naming overcoding separates two diagnoses analysts collapse into one axis of "more rigour": under-coding (too few codes, the phenomenon left vague) and over-coding (so many that the phenomenon shatters). Since the field names only the first and reads more codes as improvement, naming the second breaks that monotonic story. The deeper clarification is that the grain of analysis is itself a defended methodological choice, and the sharp question becomes positional: at what grain is this phenomenon legible, and does my coding sit above or below it?
Manages Complexity¶
An analyst faces a seemingly limitless grain decision, with codebooks growable without a stopping rule. Overcoding compresses that to a single binary: does the coding sit above or below the legibility grain? The recovery test operationalizes it — can the participant's meaning, including sequence, be reconstructed from the codes alone? That one parameter also organizes two worries into one signed axis and fixes the repair direction: lost detail means code finer, lost structure means code up.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The concept licenses diagnostic reasoning (applying the recovery test, inferring from the type of loss which way the grain is wrong), interventionist reasoning (when structure is lost, moving toward narrative grain because finer codes can't recover it), boundary-drawing (installing the over-coding end of the axis, treating grain as a defended bet not a free parameter), and prediction (code-frequency reporting misses structurally-carried findings, and rigour culture makes the failure systematic).
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within qualitative research the concept transfers as mechanism — the legibility-grain framing, the recovery test, and the repair catalog carry across ethnography, grounded theory, phenomenology, and applied fields, each with its own grain vocabulary but the same structure. Its substrate-neutral core travels as a decomposition failure (parts that can't be recombined into the whole), plus a prospective grain-of-analysis pattern. The often-cited quantitative analogs — overfitting, lossy compression — are adjacent analogy, not identical mechanism: they concern noise and information, not severed connective tissue.
