Thin Description¶

An ethnographic account that records the surface behaviour of an act but omits the contextual layers — participant meaning, social code, interpretive reasoning — a reader would need to recognise whether the act is the same kind of thing in a new setting, leaving the record true but analytically inert.

Core Idea¶

Thin description, in Clifford Geertz's interpretive anthropology, is an account that records the surface behaviour of an act but omits the contextual layers — participant meaning, social code, historical situation, the analyst's interpretive moves — that a reader would need to recognise whether the act is the same kind of thing in a new setting or merely looks similar from the outside. The famous contrast Geertz drew in "The Interpretation of Cultures" (1973) is between a wink and an eyelid twitch: a thin description notes eyelid closure; a thick description identifies the act as a wink, places it in the code through which winks communicate ironic collusion in this community, and tracks the interpretive reasoning by which the ethnographer arrived at that identification. Without the contextual layers, a reader cannot assess whether the "wink" observed in setting A and the "wink" observed in setting B are the same act or behavioural coincidences that happen to look alike.

The failure is not that information is wrong but that necessary surrounding information is absent, so the record is analytically inert for any purpose beyond cataloguing that the surface behaviour occurred. The structural test is receiver-modelling: can a future reader who did not have access to the setting perform the inference the ethnographer performed? If the description is stripped down to observable behaviour — "the nurse handed the chart to the physician," "the teacher paused before calling on anyone" — and the contextual information that gives those acts their meaning in this setting has been omitted, the reader cannot tell whether what is being described is a routine transfer of responsibility or a charged moment of status negotiation, whether the pause is pedagogical technique or anxious stalling. Thin description is a writing failure specific to interpretive social science where the primary analytic object is meaning as constituted within a social context; the remedy is what Geertz called thick description — layered, contextually saturated accounts that interweave description, member meaning, and the analyst's interpretive choices, making all three available for scrutiny rather than compressing them into a behavioural shorthand that presents conclusions without showing the work.

Structural Signature¶

What It Is Not¶

Not false or inaccurate. The defining failure is omission, not error: "the nurse handed the chart to the physician" can be perfectly true and still thin, because the contextual layers a reader needs to perform the ethnographer's inference are absent. A thin record is not wrong — it is analytically inert, useful only to catalogue that a surface behavior occurred.
Not simply a lack of richness or detail. The success criterion is transferability, not volume. Detail is required exactly insofar as a reader who lacked access needs it to recognize whether the act here and an act elsewhere are the same kind of thing — and no further. Adding more behavioral surface, or context the inference does not need, does not thicken a thin claim; supplying the one absent layer does.
Not about meaning multiplicity. Thin description is silent on polysemy — on whether an act or word carries several meanings. Its concern is whether any of the situating context survived the compression, not how many readings a fully-contextualized act might admit.
Not about whether a claim is empirically anchored. It says nothing about truth or falsifiability — a thin description can be impeccably accurate. It checks only whether the contextual layers needed for transfer are present, not whether the behavioral claim could in principle be refuted.
Not a matter of the medium chosen. Thinness is silent on representational modality: it is what happens within any medium — prose, video, diagram — when the writer compresses past the transfer threshold. A richer medium does not by itself thicken a description, nor does a sparse one thin it.
Not theme reification. Its qualitative-methods neighbour mis-owns an authored abstraction as if it were a real entity; thin description omits the context a reader needs. One is over-claiming the status of a construct (reification), the other is under-specifying for transfer — opposite failure shapes, not variants of one.

Scope of Application¶

Thin description lives within interpretive social science and the qualitative-research methods descended from it, recurring across the substantive domains where field reports record situated behaviour; its reach is within that domain — one analytic frame applied to different content, the failure looking identical in each. The broader under-specification-for-transfer (audience-fitted-description) pattern it gestures at recurs far beyond it under other names (tacit_knowledge, the reproducibility crisis, runbook drift), owned by that broader pattern rather than by the Geertzian label. The habitats below are genuine in-domain uses.

Ethnography — the home turf: interpretive accounts of cultural acts where the wink-versus-twitch discipline (write in the code and the interpretive move, not just the behaviour) is the central craft skill.
Design and market research — field write-ups of user behaviour that go thin when they record the surface act but omit the situated meaning a reader needs to judge whether a finding transfers to another site.
Clinical-interview accounts — records of patient encounters that note the behaviour but strip the contextual layers giving it significance, leaving the reader unable to recover the clinician's inference.
Intelligence analysis — field memos whose behavioural observations lack the code and interpretive reasoning a later reader would need to recognise the act in a new setting.
Case-method teaching — teaching cases that record what happened without the contextual saturation that lets students perform the analytic inference the case was built to support.

Clarity¶

Naming thin description makes a previously inarticulate complaint auditable. Instead of "the ethnography didn't feel rich enough" — a verdict that points nowhere and invites the writer to add more of everything — the term identifies which contextual layers are missing at which behavioral claim: the participant meaning, the social code, the historical situation, the analyst's interpretive reasoning. It separates three things that surface-level reporting collapses: what happened (the recordable behavior), what it meant to participants (its situated significance in this setting's code), and why it is reportable (the analytic point the ethnographer draws). The wink-versus-twitch contrast is the discipline made vivid: identical eyelid closures, decomposable only once the code and the interpretive move are written in alongside the behavior.

The decisive reframing is that the success criterion becomes transferability, not richness for its own sake. Detail is not virtuous in proportion to its volume; it is required exactly insofar as a reader who lacked access to the setting needs it to perform the inference the ethnographer performed. That converts "is this account thick enough?" into a sharp, walkable test — at each behavioral claim, ask what context a future reader would need to recognize whether the act observed here and the act observed in a different site are the same kind of thing or coincidental look-alikes. A record that fails the test is not wrong but analytically inert, useful only for cataloguing that a surface behavior occurred. The concept also marks its own boundaries: it is silent on meaning multiplicity, on whether a claim is empirically anchored, and on the medium chosen — it concerns specifically whether the contextual layers needed for transfer survived the compression into behavioral shorthand.

Manages Complexity¶

Interpretive ethnography carries a long, heterogeneous list of craft virtues — positionality, member meaning, situatedness, reflexive layering, audit trail, immersion, "richness" — each held up as something a good account must have, so that judging or repairing a thin write-up turns into adding more of everything and hoping the unease lifts. Thin description, paired with Geertz's thick description, compresses that list to one walkable test run at a single granularity. At each behavioral claim the analyst asks one question: what context would a reader who lacked access to the setting need to recognize whether the act observed here and an act observed at a different site are the same kind of thing or coincidental look-alikes? That converts an open-ended demand for richness into a finite per-claim audit, and it fixes the success criterion as transferability rather than volume — detail is required exactly insofar as it is needed for that inference and no further, so "is this thick enough?" stops being a matter of taste and becomes a checkable property. The quantity the analyst tracks is the three-layer decomposition of each claim: what happened (the recordable behavior), what it meant to participants (its significance in this setting's code), and why it is reportable (the analytic move the ethnographer draws). From the presence or absence of the second and third layers the qualitative outcome reads off directly — a claim carrying all three is thick and travels; a claim stripped to behavioral surface is thin and is not wrong but analytically inert, useful only to catalogue that a surface behavior occurred. The wink-versus-twitch case is the test in miniature: identical eyelid closures separate into distinct acts the moment the code and the interpretive reasoning are written in alongside the behavior, and stay fused when they are not. The same three-layer frame also marks the concept's own boundaries cleanly, so the practitioner does not over-apply it: it is silent on meaning multiplicity, silent on whether a claim is empirically anchored, and silent on the medium — it speaks only to whether the layers needed for transfer survived the compression into shorthand, which is the one thing the walk actually checks.

Abstract Reasoning¶

The first characteristic move is diagnostic via receiver-modelling: at each behavioral claim, simulate a future reader who lacked access to the setting and ask whether that reader could perform the inference the ethnographer performed. The signature being read is a sentence stripped to recordable behavior — "the nurse handed the chart to the physician," "the teacher paused before calling on anyone," "at 07:00 the night nurse hands the patient list to the day nurse" — with the second and third layers (participant meaning, analytic point) absent. So the analyst reasons FROM "this claim records the surface act but omits the code that gives it significance here and the interpretive move that makes it reportable" TO "a reader could not tell whether this is a routine transfer of responsibility or a charged status negotiation, whether the pause is pedagogical technique or anxious stalling — the description is thin." The diagnosis is not that the sentence is false but that it is analytically inert: true, yet useless for anything beyond cataloguing that a surface behavior occurred.

The second move is interventionist, with transferability as the target rather than richness: from a thin claim, prescribe exactly which layer to restore, and no more. Because detail is required precisely insofar as a reader needs it for the inference, the analyst reasons FROM "the reader cannot recover the meaning of this act" TO "write in the missing layer — the member meaning, the social code, the interpretive reasoning — alongside the behavior, until the inference becomes reproducible," which is what thickening is. The move carries a sharp efficiency prediction that distinguishes it from a generic "add more": adding further behavioral surface, or context the inference does not need, does not thicken a thin claim, while supplying the one absent layer does — so "is this account thick enough?" is answered per claim by whether the transfer inference now goes through, not by volume. The remedy family (situated detail, participant voice, interpretive layering, audit trail) is unified as restoring whichever of the three layers the compression dropped.

The third move is predictive-and-boundary-drawing, run through the wink-versus-twitch test. The concept predicts when two same-looking acts will or will not be decomposable: identical eyelid closures observed at site A and site B remain fused — indistinguishable as the same or merely coincidental — exactly while the code and interpretive move are omitted, and separate into distinct acts the moment those layers are written in. So the analyst reasons FROM "this record gives only the behavioral surface" TO "a reader cannot decide whether the act here and an act elsewhere are the same kind of thing or look-alikes, so the finding's transfer is undecidable," and FROM "the layers are present" TO "the comparison across sites becomes adjudicable." The same move draws the concept's own boundaries by predicting what thinness does not govern: it is silent on meaning multiplicity (polysemy), silent on whether a claim is empirically anchored (falsifiability), and silent on the medium chosen (representational modality) — it speaks only to whether the contextual layers needed for transfer survived the compression into shorthand. The analyst thus uses the concept to flag transfer-undecidability specifically, without over-applying it to questions of truth, ambiguity, or format that the walk does not check.

Knowledge Transfer¶

Within qualitative research thin description transfers as mechanism across substantive domains. The same receiver-modelling test (at each behavioral claim, can a reader who lacked access perform the inference the ethnographer performed?), the same three-layer decomposition (what happened / what it meant / why it is reportable), the same transferability-not-richness success criterion, and the same intervention family (situated detail, participant voice, interpretive layering, audit trail, longer site immersion) apply identically whether the field report is an ethnography, a design- or market-research write-up, a clinical-interview account, an intelligence memo, or a case-method teaching case. The wink-versus-twitch test runs the same way in each, and the diagnosis — a claim stripped to behavioral surface is not wrong but analytically inert — is constant, because the analytic object throughout is meaning constituted within a social context and the failure is the same compression past the transfer threshold.

Beyond qualitative research the honest report is (B) with a "same failure, different name" structure, and a caveat about what carries. The broader pattern thin description gestures at — under-specification for transfer, or context-shedding compression: omitting the surrounding information a receiver would need to recognise whether a thing is the same kind of thing in a new setting — genuinely recurs across substrates as co-instances: documentation that does not survive new maintainers, lab protocols missing the tacit detail needed to reproduce a result, legal opinions stripped of the background facts a later court needs, runbooks that drift from the system they describe. But two things keep "thin description" from being the thing that travels. First, in each of those substrates the natives already have their own concepts for the failure — tacit_knowledge, the reproducibility crisis and protocol fidelity, runbook drift, missing provenance, plain under-specification — so what one finds elsewhere is a sibling concept, not thin description re-instantiated. Second, thin description does not strip cleanly: it carries the Geertzian apparatus (the thick/thin contrast, interpretive anthropology, and the resolving moves of member meaning and interpretive layering) as baggage, while the general pattern sheds that scaffolding. The genuinely portable abstraction is therefore the receiver-modelling discipline itself — describe at the level the next user needs to perform your inference — which is better carried by a broader audience-fitted-description pattern (and is adjacent to tacit_knowledge and the reproducibility literature) than by importing the ethnographic label. So any cross-domain lesson should be stated as that audience-fitted / under-specification-for-transfer pattern, with "thin description" reserved for its interpretive-social-science instantiation. Two boundaries keep the concept from over-reaching even at home and travel with it: it is silent on meaning multiplicity (polysemy), silent on whether a claim is empirically anchored (falsifiability), and silent on the medium (representational_modality) — it speaks only to whether the layers needed for transfer survived the compression. Examples¶

Canonical¶

Geertz's wink-versus-twitch contrast, in "Thick Description" (1973, drawing on Gilbert Ryle), is the defining instance. Consider two boys, each rapidly contracting the eyelids of one eye. At the level of behavioral surface the two movements are identical — a camera would record the same eyelid closure. But one is an involuntary twitch and the other a wink: a deliberate signal, sent according to a socially established code, to a particular someone, conveying (say) ironic collusion, and perhaps even a parody of a wink. A thin description records "rapid contraction of the right eyelid." A thick description identifies the act as a wink, specifies the code that makes it communicative in this community, and shows the interpretive reasoning by which the observer distinguished wink from twitch — and from a parody of a wink.

Mapped back: The recorded eyelid contraction is the behavioural surface; the wink's meaning-as-signal in the local code is the situated-meaning layer; the observer's reasoning that it is a wink (not a twitch) is the interpretive layer. Omitting the latter two is the context-strip yielding analytic inertness. This is the wink-versus-twitch decomposition exactly: identical closures stay fused until the code and interpretive move are written in, at which point they separate into distinct acts.

Applied / In Practice¶

Geertz's own study "Deep Play: Notes on the Balinese Cockfight" is the extended field deployment. A thin account would report: men gather, cocks fight, bets are placed, money changes hands. Geertz instead reads the cockfight as a text about Balinese society — writing in the elaborate betting code, the way a man's cock stands for himself and his kin group, the status rivalries enacted through the wagering, and the fact that deep matches are never really about money but about honor, esteem, and the dramatization of status hierarchy. Only with those layers present can a reader recognize what kind of event a cockfight is, and whether a fight in one village enacts the same social drama as one in another.

Mapped back: "Men, birds, bets, money" is the behavioural surface; the status-and-kinship significance of the wagering is the situated-meaning layer; Geertz's reading of the fight as a status drama is the interpretive layer. Supplying all three meets the transferability criterion — a reader can now judge whether cockfights across sites are the same kind of event — and passes the receiver-modelling test the thin four-word account fails.

Structural Tensions¶

T1: Transferability versus richness (context required only insofar as an imagined reader needs it). The concept's decisive reframe is that the success criterion is transferability, not volume — detail is required exactly insofar as a reader who lacked access needs it to perform the ethnographer's inference, and no further. This converts an open-ended "add more of everything" into a targeted per-claim audit and predicts that piling on behavioral surface does not thicken a thin claim. But the criterion is relative to a modeled future reader whose inference goals and prior access the writer must guess: what one reader needs to recognize the act, another already knows or needs differently. The tension is that the efficiency the reframe buys (supply only the missing layer) rests on correctly predicting the needs of a hypothetical receiver, so "thick enough" is never absolute — it is thick enough for a particular imagined reader's inference, which the writer chooses. Diagnostic: Is the amount of context here calibrated to a specific reader's inference need, or being judged as richness in the abstract with no receiver in view?

T2: Omission versus error (an account that is impeccably true and analytically dead). The defining failure is absence, not falsehood — "the nurse handed the chart to the physician" can be perfectly accurate and still thin. This is what makes the concept precise, but it also means thinness is invisible to every standard that checks correctness: a fastidiously true, well-sourced, verifiable account can be analytically inert, and no accuracy audit will flag it, because the defect lives in a dimension (transfer) that truth-checking does not touch. The tension is that the ordinary marks of a good record — accuracy, verifiability, care — are all satisfiable by a description that does no analytic work, so the very rigor that passes a factual review can coexist with total transfer-uselessness, and a reviewer looking for errors will find none. Diagnostic: Is the account being judged only for whether its claims are true, or also for whether a reader could recover the inference those true claims were meant to support?

T3: Making the interpretive move visible versus embedding the analyst's reading (thickening that supplies context and a verdict together). Thickening writes in the interpretive layer — the analytic move by which the ethnographer read the behavior — which is a virtue: it makes the reasoning available for scrutiny rather than presenting a conclusion without showing the work. But that same layer embeds the ethnographer's particular reading into the record as part of the described context, and the code they supply could itself be a misreading. A thick description of the wink asserts that it is a wink communicating ironic collusion; if the ethnographer misjudged the code, the thickness has now baked a wrong interpretation into what looks like rich context. The tension is that supplying the interpretive layer both exposes the reasoning to challenge and presents a contestable reading with the authority of contextual saturation. Diagnostic: Is the interpretive layer written in so it can be scrutinized and contested, or presented as settled context that smuggles the analyst's reading in as fact?

T4: The self-marking silences versus the temptation to read thick as good (a fix that solves only transfer). The concept disciplines itself by marking what it does not govern — silent on meaning multiplicity (polysemy), on empirical anchoring (falsifiability), and on the medium (representational modality) — so it flags transfer-undecidability specifically and nothing else. This scoping prevents over-application, but it also means "thick" certifies only that the transfer inference goes through: a thickened account can still be false, ambiguous, or wrongly framed. The tension is that thickness is easily mistaken for overall quality, when it resolves exactly one failure and is silent on the others the same account may harbor. A practitioner who treats "make it thick" as "make it good" over-reads the concept past the one thing its walk actually checks. Diagnostic: Is thickness here being credited with solving transfer only, or mistaken for a guarantee of truth, determinacy, and analytic soundness the concept explicitly disclaims?

T5: Autonomy versus reduction (an ethnographic failure or an instance of under-specification-for-transfer). Within interpretive social science and its qualitative descendants, thin description transfers as mechanism — the receiver-modelling test, the three-layer decomposition, the transferability criterion, the wink-versus-twitch discipline — across ethnography, design research, clinical-interview accounts, intelligence memos, and teaching cases, because the analytic object is meaning constituted in a social context throughout. Beyond that, the broader pattern (context-shedding compression: omitting what a receiver needs to recognize a thing as the same kind of thing elsewhere) genuinely recurs — undocumented handoffs, irreproducible protocols, stripped legal opinions, drifting runbooks — but each field has its own sibling name (tacit_knowledge, reproducibility/protocol fidelity, runbook drift), and thin description does not strip cleanly: it carries the Geertzian apparatus as baggage while the general pattern sheds it. The portable abstraction is the receiver-modelling discipline itself — describe at the level the next user needs to perform your inference — better carried by an audience-fitted-description parent. The tension is between a named ethnographic failure whose interpretive-anthropology apparatus earns its own study and an under-specification-for-transfer pattern that carries the portable content. Diagnostic: Resolve toward the audience-fitted-description / under-specification-for-transfer pattern (adjacent tacit_knowledge) when the substrate is not interpretive social science; toward named thin description when member meaning and the interpretive move within a social-context account are what went missing.

Structural–Framed Character¶

Thin description sits at the framed-leaning position on the structural–framed spectrum: a writing failure constituted by the craft of interpretive ethnography and codified within a specific scholarly tradition, resting on a genuinely portable under-specification skeleton that keeps it off the framed pole. The criteria mostly point framed. Its evaluative weight is real: the concept names a failure — an account that is "analytically inert," a compression that "presents conclusions without showing the work" — so to call a description thin is to convict it, a diagnostic verdict rather than a neutral description. It is strongly human-practice-bound: thinness is a defect that exists only within a written account produced for a reader — its very test is receiver-modelling, whether a future reader who lacked access could perform the ethnographer's inference — so strip away the practice of writing up situated behaviour for an audience and there is no thinness, only events; the failure is a property of the representational act, not of the world. Its institutional origin is specific and explicit: the concept is Geertz's interpretive-anthropology apparatus (the thick/thin contrast, the wink-versus-twitch exemplar, the resolving moves of member meaning and interpretive layering), an artifact of a particular theoretical lineage rather than a fact nature marks. On vocab_travels it is domain-pinned: the operative vocabulary — situated meaning, social code, interpretive layer, the transferability criterion — is meaningful on the interpretive-social-science substrate, and off it each field already has its own sibling name for the failure. Its character: an evaluatively charged, ethnographic-craft-constituted writing failure, structural only in the under-specification-for-transfer skeleton it instantiates from its umbrella and dresses in the thick/thin apparatus of interpretive social science.

Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶

This section decides why thin description is a domain-specific abstraction and not a prime, and it carries the case for its domain-specificity in the same move.

What is skeletal (could lift toward a cross-domain prime). Strip the ethnography and a thin relational structure survives: a record omits the surrounding information a receiver would need to recognise whether the thing described is the same kind of thing in a new setting, so the record is true but cannot be transferred. The portable pieces are abstract — a describer, a distant receiver who must re-perform an inference, and a compression that drops exactly the context the inference needs. That skeleton is under-specification for transfer (audience-fitted description): the receiver-modelling discipline of describing at the level the next user needs to perform your inference, adjacent to tacit_knowledge and the reproducibility literature. It is genuinely substrate-spanning — undocumented handoffs, irreproducible lab protocols, legal opinions stripped of background facts, runbooks that drift from the system they describe all instance it — which is why it is the core thin description instantiates, not what makes the entry the particular thing it is.

What is domain-bound. Almost everything that makes the concept thin description in particular is interpretive-anthropology furniture that does not survive extraction. The Geertzian thick/thin contrast; the wink-versus-twitch exemplar; the three-layer decomposition (behavioural surface / situated meaning in the local social code / the analyst's interpretive move); and the resolving moves of member meaning and interpretive layering are the worked apparatus of a specific theoretical lineage whose analytic object is meaning constituted within a social context. The decisive test is twofold. First, the failure exists only within a written account produced for a reader — its test is receiver-modelling — so strip away the practice of writing up situated behaviour for an audience and there is no thinness, only events. Second, and tellingly, thin description does not strip cleanly: it carries the Geertzian scaffolding as baggage, whereas the general under-specification pattern sheds it — and in each non-ethnographic substrate the natives already have their own sibling name for the failure (tacit_knowledge, protocol fidelity and the reproducibility crisis, runbook drift, missing provenance), so what recurs there is a cousin concept, not thin description re-instantiated.

Why this does not clear the prime bar. A prime is a relational structure whose vocabulary travels and whose cross-domain transfer is recognition of the same mechanism, not analogy. Not to Be Confused With¶

Thick description. Geertz's paired success case — the layered, contextually saturated account that interweaves behavioural surface, participant meaning in the local code, and the analyst's interpretive move, making all three available for scrutiny. It is not a confusable to avoid but the concept's own complement: thick description is thin description repaired (the missing layers written back in). Part-vs-whole. Tell: does the account supply the situated meaning and interpretive reasoning a distant reader needs to re-perform the inference (thick), or record only the observable act and leave those layers out (thin)?
Theme reification. Its qualitative-methods neighbour — but the opposite failure shape. Theme reification over-owns an authored abstraction, treating an analyst-built theme as a real entity in the world; thin description under-specifies, omitting the context a reader needs for transfer. One over-claims a construct's status, the other supplies too little. Tell: is the fault that a constructed category is presented as a found fact (theme reification), or that a true behavioural record lacks the situating layers a reader needs (thin description)?
Tacit knowledge. Knowledge that resists articulation — skills and understandings a practitioner has but cannot fully put into words. Thin description omits articulable context that the writer could have written and chose not to (compression past the transfer threshold); tacit knowledge is context that is hard to externalise in principle. They are adjacent (both bear on what a record fails to convey) but differ in whether the missing content was expressible. Tell: was the needed context omittable-but-writable and simply left out (thin description), or intrinsically hard to put into words at all (tacit knowledge)?
Mere vagueness / lack of detail. The generic complaint that an account is sparse or imprecise. Thin description's criterion is transferability, not volume: a highly detailed record can still be thin if it piles on behavioural surface while omitting the one situating layer the inference needs, and a spare record can be thick if it supplies exactly that layer. Tell: is the account faulted simply for being short on detail (vagueness), or specifically for lacking the contextual layer a distant reader needs to recognise the act as the same kind of thing elsewhere (thinness)?
Polysemy. The property of an act, word, or symbol carrying multiple meanings. Thin description is explicitly silent on meaning multiplicity — it asks whether any situating context survived compression, not how many readings a fully-contextualised act admits. Tell: is the concern how many meanings the act could bear (polysemy), or whether the reader was given enough context to recover even one (thin description)?
Under-specification for transfer / audience-fitted description (the umbrella it instantiates). The substrate-neutral discipline — describe at the level the next user needs to perform your inference — of which thin description is the interpretive-social-science instance. Its cross-domain siblings wear their own names (runbook drift, the reproducibility crisis and protocol fidelity, missing provenance), adjacent to tacit_knowledge. Not a confusable peer but the parent, which strips cleaner because it sheds the Geertzian apparatus. Tell: outside interpretive social science, the portable content is this audience-fitted-description pattern — treated more fully elsewhere — while the thick/thin contrast and wink-versus-twitch craft are thin description's home-bound accent.
