An ethnographic account that records the surface behaviour of an act but omits the contextual layers — participant meaning, social code, interpretive reasoning — a reader would need to recognise whether the act is the same kind of thing in a new setting, leaving the record true but analytically inert.

Thin description lives within interpretive social science and the qualitative-research methods descended from it, recurring across substantive domains where field reports record situated behaviour.

Clarity¶

Naming thin description makes an inarticulate complaint auditable. Instead of "the ethnography didn't feel rich enough," the term identifies which layers are missing at which claim: participant meaning, social code, interpretive reasoning. It separates what happened, what it meant, and why it is reportable. The decisive reframing is that the success criterion becomes transferability, not richness: detail is required exactly insofar as a reader lacking access needs it to perform the ethnographer's inference — a walkable per-claim test.

Manages Complexity¶

Interpretive ethnography carries a long list of craft virtues — positionality, situatedness, reflexivity, richness — so repairing a thin write-up becomes adding more of everything. The concept compresses that to one walkable test run per claim: what context would a reader lacking access need to recognise whether this act and an act elsewhere are the same kind of thing? The analyst tracks a three-layer decomposition — what happened, what it meant, why it is reportable — and reads the verdict off whether the second and third layers survived.

Abstract Reasoning¶

The concept licenses diagnostic receiver-modelling — simulating a reader who lacked access and asking whether they could perform the ethnographer's inference — with a thin claim diagnosed as inert, not false. Its interventionist move targets transferability rather than richness, prescribing exactly which absent layer to restore and predicting that adding unneeded surface does not thicken. Its predictive/boundary-drawing move runs the wink-versus-twitch test (same-looking acts stay fused until the layers are written in) and marks the concept's silences: on polysemy, falsifiability, and medium.

Knowledge Transfer¶

Within qualitative research thin description transfers as mechanism across substantive domains — the receiver-modelling test, three-layer decomposition, transferability criterion, and intervention family apply identically to ethnography, design research, clinical accounts, and teaching cases, because the object throughout is meaning constituted in social context. Beyond it the broader under-specification-for-transfer pattern recurs (documentation that fails new maintainers, irreproducible protocols) but under native names — tacit_knowledge, the reproducibility crisis, runbook drift. The genuinely portable abstraction is the audience-fitted-description discipline, not the Geertzian label, which carries interpretive-anthropology baggage.
