Core Idea

A paraphrase creates a new linguistic realization of an existing passage while preserving what the passage says. Legitimate changes can occur at word, morphology, syntax, sentence, ordering, discourse, or abstraction level. The invariant is not a bag of keywords but the source's propositions, participant roles, scope, modality, attribution, and relevant implications.

Paraphrase differs from quotation because its wording is new, and from summary because it need not reduce informational coverage. It also differs from commentary, which adds an interpreter's claims. In academic contexts, transformation of language does not transfer ownership of the idea: attribution remains necessary where the source requires it.

Structural Signature

Sig role-phrases:

  • source expression — provides the meaning and stance that constrain the restatement It is essential. Counterfactual: Without a source there is no relation of paraphrase.
  • semantic content — sets what must remain invariant across formulations It is essential. Counterfactual: If central claims or entailments change, the result is a reinterpretation or distortion.
  • surface transformation — changes lexical, syntactic, or discourse realization It is essential. Counterfactual: Verbatim repetition is quotation, not paraphrase.
  • scope and stance — preserve modality, qualification, attribution, and degree It is essential. Counterfactual: Changing 'may' to 'will' or dropping attribution alters meaning despite similar topic words.
  • new communicative context — motivates clarity, compression, audience adaptation, or integration It is characteristic. Counterfactual: Change without communicative purpose can become arbitrary mutation.
  • source attribution — distinguishes legitimate reuse of another's idea from presenting it as original It is essential. Counterfactual: New words do not erase intellectual provenance.

What It Is Not

  • It is not a direct quotation with a few words changed.
  • It is not necessarily a summary or shorter than the source.
  • It is not a translation between languages, though translation can involve paraphrastic choices.
  • It is not permission to omit attribution or disguise copying.
  • Closest near-miss. A summary overlaps by preserving gist, but it deliberately omits detail; a paraphrase can preserve roughly the same informational coverage.

Scope of Application

  • Writing education. Students practice semantic fidelity and syntactic transformation.
  • Scholarly synthesis. Sources are integrated while claims and provenance remain visible.
  • Natural-language processing. Paraphrase pairs test semantic equivalence across forms.
  • Accessibility and explanation. Dense material is restated for a different audience without changing scope.

Clarity

Identify the source span and communicative purpose, then check entities, roles, quantities, negation, modality, temporal relations, attribution, and exceptions. Cite the source when its ideas require credit. Lexical difference scores cannot by themselves establish semantic fidelity.

Manages Complexity

Paraphrase separates meaning from form, enabling reuse across audiences and contexts. That separation is never perfect: emphasis, connotation, presupposition, and discourse structure can shift even when headline claims remain. Good paraphrase makes those possible losses inspectable.

Abstract Reasoning

  1. Read the complete source and identify its main and supporting propositions.
  2. Record qualifiers, stance, attribution, scope, and relations that must remain.
  3. Set aside the original syntax and reconstruct the idea for the new context.
  4. Change lexical and structural form rather than substituting isolated synonyms.
  5. Compare the new version against the source for added, lost, or strengthened claims.
  6. Restore attribution and mark any direct language as quotation.
  7. Revise for clarity without erasing technical distinctions.

Knowledge Transfer

Meaning-preserving reformulation transfers across prose, speech, and machine-language tasks when semantic invariants can be identified. It stops at translation, summary, parody, or commentary when those operations alter language, information, purpose, or stance in additional ways. The cargo is accountable equivalence under changed expression.

Examples

Applied / In Practice

An active sentence is recast in passive form while agent, action, patient, modality, and time remain unchanged.

Mapped back: form change → Syntax differs.; semantic invariants → Participant roles and qualifications remain..

Applied / In Practice

A dense abstract statement is expressed with a concrete example that preserves the original relation and limits.

Mapped back: audience adaptation → Concreteness changes while claim scope is retained..

Applied / In Practice

A writer replaces several nouns with synonyms but keeps the source's distinctive sentence structure and omits a hedge.

Mapped back: boundary → Surface change is shallow and meaning becomes stronger..

Structural Tensions

T1 — Semantic Fidelity versus Linguistic Distance. Staying too close risks copying, while moving too far risks changing the claim.

Diagnostic: Compare propositions, participant roles, modality, scope, and emphasis after rewriting.

T2 — Clarity versus Source Nuance. Simplification can aid readers but erase qualifications or technical distinctions.

Diagnostic: Treat hedges, exceptions, and attribution as part of the meaning to preserve.

Structural–Framed Character

Source-to-restatement equivalence is structural; acceptable closeness, attribution practice, and audience adaptation are institutionally framed. No surface metric alone proves equivalence or originality, so semantic and authorship judgments must remain distinct.

Structural Core vs. Domain Accent

The skeleton is invariant content under transformed expression. Linguistics supplies lexical, syntactic, and discourse operations; writing practice supplies citation and audience purpose. Without a source-relative meaning constraint, rewording becomes ordinary composition.

  • Related — quotation, summary, translation, and semantic equivalence. Each preserves a different mix of wording, coverage, language, and meaning.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space

Paraphrase sits in a crowded region of the domain-specific corpus (29th percentile for distinctiveness): several abstractions share nearly its structure, so a description that fits it tends to fit its neighbors too.

Not to Be Confused With

  • Summary. Tell: Selects and compresses the source's most important content.
  • Quotation. Tell: Preserves source wording verbatim.
  • Translation. Tell: Changes language and may introduce distinct equivalence problems.
  • Patchwriting. Tell: Retains too much source syntax while making superficial substitutions.

The frozen Wikipedia revision is discovery provenance. The retained source set was reviewed for identity, formal or operational relation, and scope. The encyclopedia's structural synthesis is bounded to those claims; a thin authority surface is recorded as a nonblocking source-strengthening repair rather than concealed.
