Pedal Point¶
Sustain one voice on a single pitch while the surrounding voices move through the harmonic progression, generating licensed dissonance against the held tone that resolves when a consonating chord finally arrives — an arch of tension whose held degree fixes whether it builds or confirms.
Core Idea¶
A pedal point is a voice-leading device in tonal harmony in which one voice — most often the bass, a legacy of the organ pedal-board — sustains a single pitch over an extended passage while the surrounding voices continue through the prevailing progression, generating dissonance against the held tone before arriving at a chord that consonates with it. The defining feature is not the sustained pitch but the dissonance-and-resolution arc: tension accumulates as harmonies pass through non-functional chords, then releases on reconciliation. A dominant pedal builds tension; a tonic pedal anchors arrival.
Scope of Application¶

Clarity¶
Naming a passage "on a dominant pedal" hands the analyst a compressed packet of voice-leading information: one voice is static, the dissonances are read against the surrounding progression not the held tone, and closure is owed on a consonating chord. The label dissolves a recurring puzzle — how a passage sustains long chromatic dissonance without forfeiting coherence. It also fixes what kind of object the held tone is (a non-harmonic tone, distinguished by duration and bass placement) and forces the functional question: dominant pedal or tonic pedal?
Manages Complexity¶
An extended passage of clashing sonorities over a held bass looks locally incoherent, every beat raising why the dissonance is tolerated. Recognizing the pedal collapses that sprawl: the held tone is set aside as static, and the upper voices are read against the surrounding progression, so the dissonances become the expected by-product of a known progression. A page of vertical analysis reduces to three tracked quantities — held degree, the progression above, and the consonating goal — with a two-way branch on the degree fixing the whole dramatic function.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The device's signature move reasons from a surface of unexplained dissonance to a single structural fact — a static voice — that licenses the clashes.
