Sustain one voice on a single pitch while the surrounding voices move through the harmonic progression, generating licensed dissonance against the held tone that resolves when a consonating chord finally arrives — an arch of tension whose held degree fixes whether it builds or confirms.

Core Idea

A pedal point (also: pedal tone, organ point) is a voice-leading device in tonal harmony in which one voice — most commonly the bass, a legacy of the organ pedal-board that gave the device its name — sustains or reiterates a single pitch over an extended passage while the surrounding voices continue through the prevailing harmonic progression, often generating dissonances against the held tone before finally arriving at a chord that consonates with it. The defining structural feature is not mere sustained pitch but the dissonance-and-resolution arc it produces: as upper-voice harmonies pass through chords that are non-functional against the pedal, audible tension accumulates; when the progression lands on a chord that agrees with the held tone, the tension releases. A dominant pedal — the most common form in common-practice Western art music — holds the fifth scale degree in the bass through harmonies that traverse distant chords (often including tonic-six-four, secondary dominants, and chromatic passing chords), creating a long arch of increasing harmonic pressure that resolves when the tonic finally arrives, confirmed by a bass note the listener has been hearing all along. What It Is Not

A note held with no surrounding progression to clash against and reconcile with is not doing pedal-point work.

Read note-against-note, every beat raises the question of why the dissonance is tolerated and where the harmony actually is, and the passage threatens to dissolve into a list of unexplained clashes. Recognizing the pedal collapses that local sprawl by changing the question the analyst asks of every sonority. The closing bars of Bach's Prelude in C major (Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I, BWV 846) are a textbook pedal point, and they show the device's two functions back to back. After the prelude's steady arpeggiated progression, the bass drops to G — the fifth scale degree — and holds it while the upper voices move through a series of increasingly tense chords, including chromatic and diminished sonorities that clash against the sustained G. Read against G alone these chords are dissonant; read against the progression they trace, they are an arch of accumulating pressure over a dominant pedal, demanding a tonic. The music then resolves to C, and the bass now holds that pitch — a tonic pedal — while the final chords elaborate serenely above it, confirming home-key arrival. Hindustani (North Indian) classical music deploys the device as a continuous drone through the tanpura, the practice at the pedal point's drone-bass limit. Throughout a raga performance a tanpura sounds an unbroken drone on the tonic (Sa) and typically the fifth (Pa), providing a fixed pitch-ground that never changes while the soloist's melodic line explores the raga — ascending, descending, bending microtonally away from and back toward those anchor pitches. The held drone keeps the tonal centre fixed so that every melodic excursion is heard as a departure from and return to it, and the expressive tension of a phrase comes precisely from how far it strays from the sounding Sa before resolving back. Performers treat the drone as the perceptual foundation the entire raga is measured against.

Yet the very same held tone is the strongest anchor of the passage's key-sense, the thing keeping the tonality coherent while the voices wander.   • Drone. A continuously sounding pitch (or pitch-and-fifth) that grounds a texture — the bagpipe or tanpura ground.
