Perceptual Set

Explain how prior expectation, context, motivation, or expertise biases what is perceived from ambiguous or degraded input — the percept is the prior weighted by how decisive the sensory evidence is, so the expectation dominates precisely when the stimulus underdetermines it.

Core Idea

Perceptual set is the phenomenon by which a perceiver's prior expectations, context, motivation, or recent experience bias what is perceived from ambiguous, degraded, or briefly presented input. The mechanism is top-down: the system brings an implicit hypothesis to each stimulus, and when the sensory evidence is impoverished, that prior contributes disproportionately to the percept. In Bruner and Minturn's classic case, an equivocal figure is seen as B or as 13 depending only on whether the perceiver was primed with letters or numbers.
