  • Not just a balanced melody. Surface symmetry is not the criterion; cadential-weight asymmetry is. The ear's sense of balance is exactly what the period replaces with a structural test.

Its first eight bars split into two four-bar phrases that begin with the same graceful, dotted-rhythm melodic idea. The first phrase (bars 1–4) states that idea and closes on a half cadence — an arrival on the dominant that sounds unfinished, leaving the ear expecting more. The second phrase (bars 5–8) restarts with the parallel opening material but redirects its ending to a perfect authentic cadence, landing firmly on the tonic. The classical default is a symmetrical four-plus-four period, and that prototype is so pervasive that "period" is casually equated with "two equal phrases." The period's nearest neighbor in the phrase-structure typology: a single phrase that generates momentum internally through presentation, continuation, and cadence, rather than pairing two phrases by cadential contrast. The discriminating fact is where the resolving drive sits — across a phrase boundary (period) or inside one phrase (sentence). Tell: does the passage earn its coherence from a weak-then-strong contrast between two phrases (period) or from presentation-continuation-cadence within one (sentence)?

  • Hybrid theme-types. Caplin's category for themes that blend period and sentence features — an antecedent answered by a continuation rather than a parallel consequent, or compound structures nesting one shape inside another.
