Period Structure¶
Pair an antecedent phrase closing on a weak cadence with a consequent phrase closing on a strong one, so the cadential-weight asymmetry — a close that demands continuation answered by one that discharges it — binds two phrases into a single completed musical thought.
Core Idea¶
A period is a phrase-pair structure in which an antecedent closes on a weak cadence (typically a half cadence on the dominant), answered by a consequent closing on a strong cadence (typically a perfect authentic cadence on tonic). The pair functions as one higher-level syntactic unit: the antecedent opens an expectation and leaves it unresolved, the consequent fulfills it. The defining commitment is the cadential-weight asymmetry — without it, the pair is a mere two-phrase succession. Classical themes (Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven) are built largely from periods.

Naming a passage a "period" tells the analyst that two phrases function as a single syntactic unit, and why: parallel openings bound by a weak-then-strong cadential frame, cohering as one completed thought. Its sharper work is to locate a passage in a phrase-structure typology by forcing one diagnostic question — where does the resolving weight sit? Against the sentence, whose coherence is internal, and against a mere two-phrase succession, the test is decisive: same cadential strength on both, no period. It turns "this sounds balanced" into a precise question about which cadence is weak.
Manages Complexity¶
Classical thematic material is an enormous variety of melodic surfaces; an analyst could describe a balanced tune note by note with no account of why its halves cohere. Naming the period collapses that surface variety onto its grammar, telling the analyst to track a small set of structural facts — where each phrase closes and whether the consequent's opening is parallel or contrasting. The cadential-weight asymmetry reduces the whole coherence question to a comparison of two cadence strengths, turning classification from holistic impression into a decidable test with a clean branch structure.
