Phonological Process¶
Read a child's scattered speech errors as the output of a small number of rule-governed transformations that apply productively across whole natural classes and drop on a predictable developmental schedule.
Core Idea¶
A phonological process is a systematic, rule-governed simplification a child applies to adult target forms during acquisition, so that "errors" pattern across whole natural classes rather than item by item. Fronting collapses all velars to alveolars ("key"→"tea"), stopping replaces fricatives with stops, cluster reduction and final-consonant deletion trim syllables — each applying productively and suppressed by a predictable age.
Scope of Application¶
Lives wherever a developing child maps an adult target to a rule-governed distortion over an age-graded schedule; its home is child phonological acquisition.

Clarity¶
Naming the process reclassifies what deviant speech is: not a list of broken words but a single over-applied rule spanning a natural class. It makes the decisive clinical question askable — not "which words are wrong?" but which rules has this child failed to suppress on schedule — separating a disorder of the rule system from a scatter of unrelated mistakes.
Manages Complexity¶
A word-by-word error inventory grows endlessly with the lexicon. The construct collapses those scattered errors onto a handful of named rules, each spanning a class, so "key→tea" and "car→tar" are one fact. The clinician tracks a fixed process inventory plus, for each, one bit — present or suppressed — reading diagnosis off age norms and generalisation off the rule's class domain.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The core move is diagnostic-by-rule-inference: from mis-said words infer the smallest set of transformation rules whose class-wide application generates them. That feeds age-graded classification (which rules persist past their resolution age) and a falsifiable class-generalisation prediction (treat the rule, the whole class follows). A localisation move places the deviance in production, downstream of a possibly intact representation.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within acquisition research and speech-language pathology the construct transfers as mechanism — the rule-inference diagnostic, the age-graded classification, and the class-generalisation prediction all hold because every case is literally a child mapping an adult target to a regular distortion over a developmental timetable. Beyond that domain the honest reach is to the broader parent pattern of systematic developmental distortion (over-regularisation, L2 interlanguage), not to "phonological process" itself, whose age-graded, production-locus predictions bind it home.
