Plot (narrative)¶
The organized sequence and causal arrangement of events in a narrative.
Core Idea¶
Plot differs from raw chronological story, discourse order and theme; narratives can be nonlinear, multi-stranded or weakly causal under different theories. Events are selected and connected through causation, motivation, conflict, revelation and consequence, then ordered for audience comprehension and effect. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
The load-bearing residual is not the broad topic of narratology. It is the domain-specific identity fixed by the work and medium, event set and agents, chronological story order, presented discourse order, causal and motivational links, central conflict and turning points, subplots, resolution and interpretive evidence are explicit.
Scope of Application¶
