Prosody¶
The supra-segmental layer of speech — rhythm, stress, pitch, tempo, and pause — that encodes meaning by patterning over the words rather than in them, so a fixed lexical string can shift between statement, question, command, or sarcasm purely through its envelope.
Core Idea¶
Prosody is the supra-segmental layer of speech — rhythm, stress, intonation, pitch contour, tempo, pause, and voice quality — that encodes meaning through patterning over units rather than through the units themselves. The same lexical string can function as a statement, a question, a command, a surprised echo, or sarcasm depending entirely on its prosodic envelope; the words are invariant and the meaning shifts. Linguistic theory formalises this by treating prosody as a separate autosegmental tier with its own primitives (tones, phrasal breaks, prominence marks) that projects over the segmental tier and maintains systematic but imperfect correspondences with syntactic and discourse structure. Prosodic phrasing disambiguates syntactically ambiguous sentences ("the woman saw the man with the telescope" parses differently depending on which noun phrase the bracketing attaches the prepositional phrase to, and prosodic grouping makes the intended parse audible); intonation contours signal speech-act type, turn-yielding, and speaker stance in ways that are partly universal, partly language-specific, and partly socially indexed. The syntax-prosody interface — the mapping between syntactic constituency and prosodic constituency — is bidirectional and imperfect in both directions: syntactic structure does not uniquely determine prosodic structure, and prosodic structure is used by listeners as one cue (among several) to syntactic structure during online sentence processing. Clinical phonetics treats prosody as a diagnostic dimension: aprosodia following right-hemisphere lesion distinguishes prosodic deficits from articulation deficits; flat pitch range in Parkinson's disease, atypical intonation in autism, and monotone speech in certain dysarthrias each define prosodic failure modes with distinct neurological correlates.

What It Is Not¶
- Not a decorative or paralinguistic add-on. Prosody is meaning-bearing: the same lexical string is a statement, a question, a command, or sarcasm depending on its envelope, and prosodic phrasing disambiguates syntax. It carries speech-act type, focus, turn-yielding, and stance that the segments have no vocabulary to state — not mere affective seasoning over the "real" content.
- Not carried by the units. Meaning here rides over the segments, not by them. The controlled comparison is invariance of the words against variation of the contour: anything that shifts when the words are held constant is attributed to the supra-segmental tier, which is precisely what a segmental description cannot register.
- Not determined by syntax. The syntax-prosody interface is bidirectional and imperfect in both directions: syntactic structure does not dictate a unique contour, and listeners use prosody as one parsing cue among several. A mismatch between grammatical and prosodic structure is an expected interface fact, not a contradiction — prosody is cue, not determinant.
- Not an articulation deficit when it fails. Prosodic expression is a dimension apart from forming the sounds, so a flat pitch range or lost intonational contour is aprosodia or a prosodic deficit with its own neurological substrate (right-hemisphere lesion, Parkinson's, autism), not a problem producing segments. The two failure modes localise differently.
- Not just any structural-patterning-over-units. Although music, typography, and interface sound all carry meaning beyond their units, prosody's distinctive feature is its integration with a grammar of speech-act types, information structure, and syntactic constituency. Reading it as the bare "meaning from structure" idea drops the linguistic integration — and that idea is so general (it is also how grammar and code work) that it cannot be prosody's specific contribution.
Scope of Application¶
Prosody lives across the linguistics and speech-science subfields concerned with the supra-segmental tier of speech and its integration with a grammar of syntax and discourse; its home is the prosodic tier of language. The cross-domain cases where structure carries meaning over units (music, typography, interface sound) belong to the emergent_property / representational_modality / rhythm parents, not to prosody, whose linguistic integration does not travel — so they stay off this map.
- Autosegmental and metrical phonology — the formalization of prosody as a separate tier with its own primitives (tones, phrasal breaks, prominence marks) projecting over the segmental tier.

Clarity¶
Naming prosody establishes a separate tier of analysis, and that separation is what makes a whole class of meaning locatable at all. Without it, the fact that one lexical string can be a statement, a question, or sarcasm has nowhere to live: the words are constant, so the segmental description cannot register the difference, and the meaning shift looks like context or interpretation rather than signal. Treating rhythm, pitch, prominence, and phrasing as a tier with its own primitives gives that difference an address — it is carried over the units, not by them — and turns a vague sense that "tone of voice matters" into a structured object with tones, breaks, and prominences that can be transcribed, compared, and predicted. The sharper question the construct licenses is what does the pattern encode that the segments cannot?, and it has answers — speech-act type, focus, turn-yielding, stance — that segmental phonology has no vocabulary to state.
The tier-separation also makes the interface it maps to legible, and crucially makes its imperfection legible. Because prosodic constituency is its own structure, the field can ask how it lines up with syntactic constituency and discover that the mapping runs both ways and is exact in neither: phrasing can disambiguate "the woman saw the man with the telescope," yet syntax does not dictate a unique contour, and listeners use prosody as one cue among several. That framing keeps two things distinct that a single-stream view would fuse — the grammatical structure of an utterance and its prosodic packaging — so a mismatch between them becomes a finding rather than a contradiction. The same separation underwrites clinical precision: because prosodic expression is a dimension apart from articulation, a flat pitch range or a lost intonational contour can be named as aprosodia or a prosodic deficit and tied to its own neurological substrate, rather than being misread as a problem with forming the sounds.
Manages Complexity¶
A bare segmental transcription leaves a large, unruly remainder unaccounted for: the same string of words can be a statement, a question, a command, an incredulous echo, or sarcasm, and the difference — together with focus, turn-yielding, speaker stance, the audible parse of an ambiguous sentence, and a battery of clinical speech signs — has no place to sit. Faced without the construct, this is a sprawl of one-off observations about "tone of voice," each looking like context or interpretation rather than signal. Prosody compresses it by positing a single separate tier with a small set of primitives — tones, phrasal breaks, prominence marks — projecting over the segments. The whole remainder then resolves to patterning over a few parameters: pitch contour, prominence placement, phrasing, tempo. The analyst tracks that small parameter set and reads the functional meaning off it — a rising contour routes to question or turn-holding, a prominence shift to a different focus, a phrase break to a different syntactic attachment — instead of treating each meaning shift as an isolated fact about the utterance.
The compression has a second, interface axis. Because prosodic constituency is its own structure, its relation to syntax need not be re-derived utterance by utterance: it is stated once as a systematic-but-imperfect mapping, so a contour that disambiguates "the woman saw the man with the telescope" is read as one phrasing cue among several rather than as a fresh puzzle, and a mismatch between grammatical and prosodic structure is logged as an expected interface fact, not a contradiction. The same tier-separation collapses the clinical sprawl: aprosodia after right-hemisphere lesion, flat pitch range in Parkinson's, atypical intonation in autism, dysarthric monotone — a scatter of speech presentations — sort onto one dimension (prosodic expression, apart from articulation), each becoming a localisable failure of the same tier with its own neurological correlate rather than a separate disorder of forming sounds. The branch structure is correspondingly economical: for any utterance the analyst reads speech-act type, focus, and turn-status off the contour-and-prominence pattern; routes syntactic relations through the prosody-syntax interface as cue-not-determinant; and routes a deviant signal to a prosodic deficit (versus an articulatory one) by whether the patterning, not the segments, is impaired. What would be an open list of tone-of-voice meanings, parsing cues, and clinical signs reduces to one tier, a handful of prosodic primitives, and an interface map — from which speech-act, focus, disambiguation, and deficit all read off.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Because prosody is its own tier carrying meaning over the units rather than by them, its primary move is to read function off pattern while holding the lexical string constant. Given an utterance whose words are fixed, the analyst infers speech-act type, focus, turn-status, and stance from the supra-segmental envelope: a rising contour routes to question or turn-holding, a prominence shift routes to a different information-structural focus, a tempo or voice-quality change routes to stance such as sarcasm or surprise. The inference runs from a measurable pattern (pitch contour, prominence placement, phrasing, tempo) to a functional meaning that segmental phonology has no vocabulary to state — and the controlled comparison that licenses it is invariance of the words against variation of the envelope, so any meaning that survives lexical constancy is attributed to the tier.
A disambiguation move uses prosodic constituency to resolve syntactic structure. From the placement of a phrase break the analyst predicts which parse a listener will hear — in "the woman saw the man with the telescope," the grouping makes one attachment of the prepositional phrase audible — so the reasoning runs from prosodic phrasing to syntactic bracketing. But the construct insists this is cue, not determinant: the syntax-prosody interface is bidirectional and exact in neither direction, so prosody is treated as one cue among several that listeners weigh during online sentence processing, and a mismatch between grammatical and prosodic structure is logged as an expected interface fact rather than a contradiction to be explained away. This keeps the grammatical structure of an utterance and its prosodic packaging as two structures whose imperfect alignment is itself the object of inference.
A clinical-diagnostic move localises a deviant signal by asking whether the patterning or the segments is impaired. The diagnostic runs from "which dimension is disrupted, prosodic or articulatory?" to a different lesion site and a different disorder category. A boundary-and-interventionist move closes the frame: the tier's meaning is partly universal, partly language-specific, partly socially indexed, so the analyst predicts which prosodic functions transfer across languages and which must be learned per language, and which serve as sociolinguistic markers (uptalk, regional contours). The same separation makes the engineering prescription sharp — a speech-synthesis system that supplies correct segments but no prosodic tier is predicted to be intelligible yet unnatural, so naturalness requires generating the contour-and-prominence layer explicitly, which is the prediction a single-stream, segments-only model cannot make.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within linguistics and speech science the construct transfers as mechanism: the read-function-off-pattern move (holding the lexical string constant and attributing surviving meaning to the tier), the disambiguation-as-cue analysis, the clinical prosodic-versus-articulatory localisation, and the syntax-prosody interface map all carry across autosegmental and metrical phonology, sentence-processing and parsing research, pragmatics and conversation analysis, speech synthesis and recognition (where the contour layer is what separates intelligible from natural output), clinical assessment, sociolinguistics, and language acquisition (infants discriminate languages by prosody before segments). The transfer holds because each is literally the supra-segmental tier of speech integrated with a grammar of syntax and discourse; the home is "the prosodic tier of language," and the primitives, the interface, and the failure modes apply throughout it.
Beyond speech the honest reading is the shared-abstract-mechanism case. The cross-domain pattern the construct gestures at — meaning carried by structural patterning over a set of units rather than by the units alone — genuinely recurs: music's melodic and rhythmic structure carries information the individual notes do not, typographic emphasis carries meaning beyond the letters, and interface sound design carries meaning beyond the individual tones. But what these share is the general fact that combinatorial structure is the bearer of higher-level meaning, already carried in the catalog by emergent_property (semantic emergence at a higher organisational level), representational_modality (the medium constraining expression), and rhythm (patterned recurrence) — and arguably compositionality. That cluster of parents, not "prosody," is what carries any cross-domain lesson, and the claim is in fact so general (it is also how grammar works, how code works) that prosody's contribution cannot be the bare over-the-units idea. What stays strictly home-bound is the part that makes prosody methodologically distinctive: its integration with a grammar of speech-act types, information structure, and syntactic constituency through the bidirectional, imperfect syntax-prosody interface, and the language-specific/socially-indexed pragmatic load of its contours. Music and interface tones are not linked to a grammar of speech-acts in that way, so transposing "prosody" to them borrows the over-the-units shape while dropping the linguistic integration that gives the construct its force. The disciplined move when the lesson is wanted elsewhere is to carry the emergent_property / representational_modality / rhythm parents (the higher-level-meaning-from-structure pattern), not "prosody," whose tier primitives, syntax-prosody interface, and clinical apparatus are the part bound to the speech substrate. Canonical¶
Consider the seven-word sentence "I never said she stole my money," with the words held fixed. Stress "I" and it denies that you were the one who said it; stress "never" and it emphatically denies ever saying it; stress "said" and it implies you thought or implied it but did not say it; stress "she" and it points the accusation elsewhere; stress "stole" and it concedes she did something with the money but not theft; stress "my" and it makes the money someone else's; stress "money" and it concedes she took something but not money. Seven readings from one invariant string, distinguished purely by where prominence lands. The segmental description — identical across all seven — cannot register the difference; only the prosodic tier can.
Mapped back: The unchanging words are the segmental stream, and the seven meanings emerging from stress placement alone is the over-the-units encoding in its purest form. The shifting stress is the prominence pattern marking information-structural focus, and the different denials and concessions it produces are the pragmatic load that segmental phonology has no vocabulary to state.
Applied / In Practice¶
In clinical neurology, prosody is a diagnostic dimension separable from articulation. Elliott Ross's work on the "aprosodias" (from the early 1980s) described patients who, after right-hemisphere strokes, produced grammatically and phonetically intact speech yet had lost the ability to convey or comprehend emotional and attitudinal intonation — speaking in a flat monotone, or failing to hear a sarcastic or questioning contour. Ross argued the aprosodias mirror the classic left-hemisphere aphasias, with expressive, receptive, and conduction-type variants localizing to right-hemisphere regions homologous to Broca's and Wernicke's areas. Because segmental articulation was spared while the patterning over it failed, the deficit is named and localized as a disorder of the prosodic tier — guiding assessment and rehabilitation distinct from dysarthria therapy.
Mapped back: Intact articulation with lost intonation is exactly the prosodic failure modes isolated from a segmental deficit: the segmental stream is spared while the supra-segmental tier fails. The lost sarcastic or questioning contour is the intonation contour carrying the pragmatic load, and localizing the loss to right-hemisphere areas is the clinical payoff of treating prosody as a tier with its own neurological substrate.
Structural Tensions¶
T1: Separable tier versus grammatical integration (the autonomy that locates prosody understates what binds it). Positing prosody as its own autosegmental tier is the move that gives a whole class of meaning an address — carried over the units, not by them — and without it speech-act type, focus, and stance have nowhere to live. But the same separation risks overstating the tier's independence: prosody is systematically coupled to syntax, information structure, and discourse through the interface, and the entry itself locates prosody's distinctive force in exactly that integration. The tension is that the tier must be autonomous enough to carry meaning the segments cannot state, yet dependent enough on the grammar it projects over that stripping the integration (as music or typography do) drops what makes it prosody. Treat it as fully separable and you lose the linguistic load; treat it as fully bound and you lose the address. Diagnostic: Is the prosodic fact at issue statable on the tier alone, or only as a relation to the syntactic and discourse structure it patterns over?
T2: Cue versus determinant (the disambiguating power and the interface imperfection are one fact). Prosodic phrasing makes an ambiguous parse audible — the grouping in "the woman saw the man with the telescope" routes the attachment — so the model credits prosody with resolving syntactic ambiguity. Yet it insists in the same breath that the syntax-prosody interface is bidirectional and imperfect, so prosody is only one cue among several and syntax dictates no unique contour. The tension is that these are the same property viewed twice: the looseness that lets phrasing carry disambiguating information is the looseness that makes it non-determinative and defeasible. A listener leaning on the contour can be misled, and an analyst inferring bracketing from phrasing holds a probabilistic signal, not a proof. Diagnostic: Is the prosodic phrasing here being read as decisive evidence of the parse, or as one weighable cue that a mismatch with syntax would count as an expected interface fact rather than a contradiction?
T3: Universal versus language-specific and socially-indexed (portability without a portability rule). The tier's pragmatic load is partly universal, partly language-specific, partly socially indexed — which is what lets the analyst predict that some prosodic functions transfer across languages while others must be learned per language. But the split comes with no advance rule for which is which, so cross-linguistic and cross-cultural reading is perilous exactly where it looks safe: a rising contour that signals a question in one system may signal continuation or deference in another, and a socially-indexed marker like uptalk can be misheard as universal uncertainty. The tension is that the same construct promises cross-language reach and denies a general key to it, so every contour must be re-checked for which stratum it belongs to. Diagnostic: Is this contour's function being treated as universal, language-specific, or socially indexed — and has that stratum been verified for the relevant language rather than assumed from the analyst's own?
T4: Prosodic deficit versus articulatory deficit (a clean boundary over a shared apparatus). The clinical move localizes a deviant signal by asking whether the patterning or the segments is impaired, cleanly separating aprosodia from dysarthria and tying each to its own substrate. But prosody and articulation ride the same speech-motor apparatus, and real deficits straddle the line — a dysarthric monotone is at once a motor-execution failure and a prosodic one, and a single lesion can degrade both pitch control and segment formation together. The tension is that the dimension the construct treats as cleanly apart is, at the production level, physically entangled with the articulation it is defined against, so the diagnostic that localizes so sharply in the clear cases must adjudicate mixed cases where patterning and segments fail from one cause. Diagnostic: Is the impaired dimension isolable to the prosodic tier with articulation spared, or does the same motor or lesion source degrade segments and patterning together?
T5: Read-function-off-pattern versus the co-varying stream (the control the lab has and the wild denies). The attribution rule is a controlled comparison: hold the lexical string invariant, vary the envelope, and credit any surviving meaning to the tier — as with the seven readings of "I never said she stole my money." That control is what licenses locating meaning on the prosodic tier at all. But in natural speech the lexical and prosodic streams co-vary continuously; the words change as the contour changes, so which stream carries a given shade of meaning is underdetermined without the artificial constancy the method requires. The tension is that the construct's cleanest evidence comes from exactly the constrained comparison that ordinary utterances never supply, so field attribution is always an inference past a confound the canonical demonstration was built to remove. Diagnostic: Can the words be held constant to isolate the envelope's contribution, or are lexical and prosodic changes co-occurring so that the meaning cannot be cleanly assigned to the tier?
T6: Autonomy versus reduction (its own linguistic tier or the speech instance of its parents). "Prosody" is a canonically formalized linguistic construct with its own cargo — autosegmental tiers, tones and breaks and prominences, the syntax-prosody interface, the aprosodia clinical apparatus. Yet its portable core — meaning carried by structural patterning over units rather than by the units alone — is so general that it is also how grammar works, how music works, how code works, so the bare over-the-units idea cannot be prosody's specific contribution; that idea already belongs to emergent_property, representational_modality, rhythm, and arguably compositionality. What stays strictly home-bound is prosody's integration with a grammar of speech-act types, information structure, and syntactic constituency through the imperfect syntax-prosody interface, plus the socially-indexed pragmatic load of its contours — precisely what music and interface tones lack. Diagnostic: Resolve toward the parents (emergent property, representational modality, rhythm, compositionality) when asking what travels beyond speech; toward prosody when analyzing how a fixed lexical string shifts speech-act, focus, or stance through its envelope in situ.
Structural–Framed Character¶
Prosody sits toward the structural end of the spectrum but stops short of the pole — best read as mixed-structural, patterning with isostasy and the primacy effect: a real, evaluatively neutral, recognized-in-nature phenomenon wearing heavy discipline-specific vocabulary. On evaluative_weight it is fully structural: a pitch contour or a prominence pattern is neither good nor bad, and prosody names a meaning-bearing layer of the speech signal without any verdict — even the clinical failure modes (aprosodia, flat range) are localizations of a deficit, not condemnations. On human_practice_bound it points structural in the way that matters: prosody is a genuine feature of the speech signal that operates whether or not a linguist is present — infants discriminate languages by it before they parse segments, and the seven readings of "I never said she stole my money" ride on the envelope regardless of anyone's analysis — so it runs in its substrate observer-free, a natural regularity of the human language system rather than an institution constituted by a practice that dissolves when removed. On institutional_origin likewise structural: the autosegmental-tier formalism is a theory of a thing speech already does (like Airy/Pratt idealizing a real buoyant balance), not an artifact of a survey or agency; linguists discovered and formalized the tier, they did not invent the phenomenon.
The two criteria that keep it off the structural pole and hold it domain-specific are vocab_travels and import_vs_recognize. Its operative vocabulary — supra-segmental tier, tones and phrasal breaks, prominence, the syntax-prosody interface, intonation contour, aprosodia — is irreducibly linguistic and does not float free of the speech substrate the way "growing quantity" or a differential equation does; strip speech and the terms lose their referents. Correspondingly the transfer is bimodal, as Knowledge Transfer argues: within linguistics and speech science (phonology, parsing, pragmatics, synthesis, clinical phonetics, sociolinguistics, acquisition) it moves as recognition of the very same tier, while beyond speech the music/typography/interface-sound cases share only the abstract over-the-units shape and drop the grammatical integration, so they are import-by-analogy carried by the parents.
The portable structural skeleton is higher-level meaning emerging from structural patterning over units rather than from the units alone — emergent_property (semantic emergence at a higher organizational level), with representational_modality, rhythm, and arguably compositionality in the same cluster the entry genuinely invokes. That skeleton is substrate-spanning — it is also how grammar, music, and code work — which is exactly why it is too general to be prosody's specific contribution: it is what prosody instantiates from those parents, not what makes "prosody" itself travel. The cross-domain reach belongs to the emergent-property/modality/rhythm cluster, while prosody's distinctive content — the tier primitives, the imperfect syntax-prosody interface, the socially-indexed pragmatic load, and the aprosodia clinical apparatus — stays home in speech. Its character: an evaluatively neutral, observer-free, discovered-in-speech meaning-bearing tier whose over-the-units skeleton is fully portable through its parents but whose defining linguistic vocabulary and grammatical integration pin it to language, leaving it mixed-structural rather than a free-floating prime.
Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶
This section decides why prosody is a domain-specific abstraction and not a prime — a case sharpened by how general its portable core turns out to be.
What is skeletal (could lift toward a cross-domain prime). Strip the speech and a thin relational structure survives: higher-level meaning is carried by structural patterning over a set of units rather than by the units alone. Stated that abstractly the portable pieces are a stream of base units, a layer of patterning that projects over them, and a meaning that rides on the pattern and shifts even when the units are held constant. That skeleton is genuinely substrate-portable, which is why it recurs — in music's melodic-rhythmic structure, in typographic emphasis, in interface sound. But it is portable through a cluster of parents, not a single one: emergent_property (semantic emergence at a higher organizational level), representational_modality (the medium constraining expression), rhythm (patterned recurrence), and arguably compositionality. Tellingly, this core is so general that it is also how grammar works, how code works — which is exactly why the bare over-the-units idea cannot be prosody's specific contribution. It is the core prosody shares, not what makes it prosody.
What is domain-bound. What makes the concept prosody in particular is speech-linguistics furniture that does not survive extraction. Its content is the supra-segmental tier with its own primitives (tones, phrasal breaks, prominences) projecting over the segmental stream; the intonation contour and prominence pattern carrying speech-act type, focus, turn-yielding, and stance; the syntax-prosody interface (bidirectional and imperfect in both directions, prosody a parsing cue not a determinant); the socially-indexed pragmatic load (uptalk, regional contours) partly universal and partly language-specific; and the aprosodia clinical apparatus localizing prosodic deficits apart from articulation. Its cases — the seven readings of "I never said she stole my money," Ross's right-hemisphere aprosodias — are speech science. The decisive integration, and the decisive test: prosody's distinctive force is its integration with a grammar of speech-act types, information structure, and syntactic constituency — and music and interface tones are not linked to such a grammar, so transposing "prosody" to them borrows the over-the-units shape while dropping precisely the linguistic integration that gives the construct its force.
Why this does not clear the prime bar. A prime's vocabulary travels and its transfer is recognition of the same mechanism, not analogy. Prosody's transfer is bimodal. Within linguistics and speech science — autosegmental and metrical phonology, sentence-processing research, pragmatics, speech synthesis and recognition, clinical phonetics, sociolinguistics, acquisition — it moves intact as recognition of the very same tier, the read-function-off-pattern move and the interface map and the clinical localization all carrying because each is literally the supra-segmental tier of speech integrated with a grammar. Beyond speech the music/typography/interface-sound cases share only the abstract over-the-units shape and drop the grammatical integration — import-by-analogy carried by the parents. And when the bare structural lesson is needed off-substrate — higher-level meaning from structural patterning over units — it is already carried, in fully general form (indeed too general to be prosody-specific), by the emergent_property/representational_modality/rhythm/compositionality cluster. The cross-domain reach belongs to those parents; "prosody," as named, carries the tier-primitive, syntax-prosody-interface, socially-indexed, clinical baggage that should stay home in language.

- Segmental phonology / articulation. The tier of the individual phonemes and syllables — meaning carried by the units. Prosody is the supra-segmental layer carried over them; the two are distinct tiers with distinct failure modes (aprosodia vs dysarthria localize differently). Tell: does the phenomenon change when the words/sounds change (segmental), or when the words are held constant and only the envelope varies (prosodic)?
- Lexical tone. In tone languages, pitch on a syllable that distinguishes word meaning (Mandarin mā vs mà) — a segmental/lexical contrast, part of the word's identity. Prosodic intonation patterns over phrases to signal speech-act and stance, not to select a lexeme. They can co-occur and interact, but tone is in the word, intonation is over it. Tell: does the pitch change which word is meant (lexical tone), or the pragmatic function of a fixed string (prosodic intonation)?
- Intonation. The pitch contour specifically — one component of prosody. Prosody is the broader tier that also includes stress, rhythm, tempo, pause, and voice quality. Intonation is a part-of, not the whole. Tell: is only the pitch envelope in view (intonation), or the full supra-segmental bundle including timing and prominence (prosody)?
- Paralanguage / paralinguistics. Nonverbal vocal features (laughter, sighs, gasps, general "tone of voice" affect) treated as accompaniment to speech. Prosody rejects the add-on framing: it is linguistically integrated, grammatically encoding speech-act type, focus, and syntactic phrasing, not mere affective seasoning. - Musical prosody / melody (analogy). Music's melodic-rhythmic structure carries meaning over its notes, and "prosody" is borrowed for it.
