Core Idea

Quoting out of context selects someone's actual words but omits surrounding material needed to preserve their original meaning. The displayed words may be verbatim and correctly credited, yet the new presentation makes the source appear to endorse or reject something the full statement does not support. A short quotation is not automatically misleading; the omission must create a material gap between apparent and warranted source meaning.[^ref-f2da1d36e401]

Scope of Application

Film advertising, news and political commentary all use quotations to convey another person's view. McGlone documents a movie ad that recast praise of opening credits as praise of the film, and a political excerpt that omitted the original passage's concern for future patients. The same test applies wherever authentic source words are selected and presented to a new audience.[^ref-f2da1d36e401]

Clarity

Separate two questions: did the source say these words, and does the excerpt faithfully represent what the source meant? A quotation can pass the first and fail the second. Recover the original passage, name the omitted referent or qualifier, and compare the position a reader would attribute before and after restoration.[^ref-f2da1d36e401]

Manages Complexity

The analysis reduces a dispute over motives to the original setting, selected words, missing context, new presentation and attribution gap. Intent may matter ethically, but a textual distortion can be shown without proving it. The needed context is whichever material changes the disputed reading, not a fixed number of neighboring sentences.[^ref-f2da1d36e401]

Abstract Reasoning

Hold the quoted words fixed and restore the original setting. If the source no longer appears to make the claim suggested by the displayed excerpt, a meaning-changing cut has occurred; if the source position remains the same, brevity alone is not enough. Supply the decisive qualifier early when possible, because later correction may not fully undo a first impression.[ref-f2da1d36e401][ref-18f76a14cc94]

Knowledge Transfer

The authentic-excerpt/omitted-context test transfers literally from review blurbs to political citations. Cropped images and charts may instantiate the broader live Context Stripping, but they are not literally quotations of a speaker's words. The proposed DAG relation is a strict quotation-specific subtype of that parent.
