A reciprocal construction is a grammatical device for presenting a situation in which two or more participants stand in mutually reversed roles. In the simplest two-participant case, if one participant acts on the other, the reciprocal construal also includes the reverse relation. English each other in John and Mary criticized each other conventionally compresses John criticized Mary and Mary criticized John into one clause. The abstraction is not one word class: languages encode reciprocal situations with pronouns, verbal affixes, clitics, particles, reduplication, repeated clauses, or constructions shared with reflexive, collective, or sociative meanings.
