Reconstructive Memory

Rebuild a remembered event at retrieval from incomplete traces, learned schemas, present cues, and later information rather than replaying a fixed record, so recall can remain coherent while its details, sources, and timing change.

Core Idea

Reconstructive Memory is the cognitive architecture in which remembering rebuilds rather than replays the past. Encoding leaves incomplete traces. At retrieval the system combines what remains with present cues, learned schemas, semantic gist, goals, and later information to produce a coherent representation experienced as recollection. The process can yield accurate, approximate, or false output; construction, not error, defines the node.

Clarity

The node sits between general Pattern Completion and named memory effects. Pattern Completion reconstructs any whole from partial input. Reconstructive Memory fixes that input to a past-event trace and presents the inferred output as recollection. Manages Complexity

Memory findings can be compared by identifying the surviving trace, retrieval cue, completion resources, assembly operation, source-binding step, and changed output. Interventions then target encoding, contemporaneous records, later inputs, source prompts, temporal anchors, or alternative reconstruction instead of treating every error as a separate failure.

Abstract Reasoning

As the original trace constrains the answer less, present schemas and later inputs gain leverage. Shared priors can yield independent agreement; vivid weakly tagged inputs can enter the output while losing their source; absent timestamps invite reconstruction from cue richness; known outcomes reorganize which earlier alternatives seem coherent. Varying the cue or later input while holding the event fixed tests the constructive contribution.

Examples

An unfamiliar story reproduced after delay becomes shorter and more culturally coherent as partial traces are completed from schemas. An eyewitness exposed to a later suggestion may recall the suggested detail as part of the original event when the source tag is lost.
