Syllabary¶
A phonographic writing system or sign inventory whose basic graphemes represent syllables, core syllables, or morae as whole units, with orthographic rules covering structures the inventory does not encode directly.
Core Idea¶
A syllabary is a phonographic writing system or sign inventory in which a basic grapheme conventionally represents a syllable, core syllable, or mora as a whole. In a canonical analytic syllabary, signs for phonologically related values such as /ka/ and /ki/ need not share a graphic consonant component. Daniels contrasts this with an abugida, where a consonant-plus-inherent-vowel base is systematically modified for other vowels.
A syllabogram is one sign within such a system. The syllabary identity includes the inventory, mappings, sequencing, and repair rules that make those signs usable for a language.
Scope of Application¶
Syllabaries include Cherokee, Vai, Linear B, modern Yi, and the Japanese kana, though kana are often more precisely moraic. They are especially compatible with languages whose syllable or mora inventory is relatively small; complex consonant clusters and codas force large inventories or repair conventions.
Clarity¶
State the represented language, sign inventory, phonological unit, graphic regularities, spelling rules, and mixed-script context. Distinguish syllable from mora and inventory from orthography. Analyze actual sign function: one shape can be syllabic in one use and logographic or determinative in another.
Manages Complexity¶
The system packages recurrent sound sequences into directly readable units, reducing the need to assemble each syllable from segment letters. Its cost is inventory size: if a language permits many onset–nucleus–coda combinations, direct coverage grows rapidly and repair rules proliferate.
