Place emphasis on metric positions where the listener does not expect it, against a maintained regular pulse, so the displacement registers as propulsion only because a felt grid stays put for the played accents to lean against.

Syncopation is the rhythmic technique of placing emphasis — by onset, accent, duration, or rest — on metric positions where the listener does not expect it, against a maintained or implied regular grid. It is constitutively relational: the displacement registers only against something that stays put. In performance the mechanism is dual — one layer holds the grid (bass, drums, ragtime left hand) while another displaces its accents off the beat (melody, soloist, right hand) — and the interplay creates the characteristic rhythmic energy.
Scope of Application¶
Lives wherever a regular metric pulse is felt as a reference; the displacement registers only against a continuously inferable grid.
- Jazz — the swung off-beat snare on beats 2 and 4; bebop comping.

Clarity¶
Naming syncopation makes clear that rhythmic interest is the relationship between the played pattern and the felt grid, not complexity for its own sake. Its central move prises apart the played accents from the felt meter, since a displaced accent registers only against a grid that stays put. It exposes "groove" as a small set of adjustable quantities — micro-timing offset, accent profile, density — and sharpens distinctions like anticipation (landing early) versus suspension (landing late).
