Systematic Review¶
A systematic review uses explicit methods to find, select, appraise and synthesize studies answering a bounded research question.
Core Idea¶
A systematic review answers a bounded research question by documenting how studies were found, selected, critically appraised and synthesized. The explicit method makes choices auditable, but does not guarantee an unbiased or complete evidence base. Meta-analysis is optional when studies can be combined meaningfully.[ref-ac43538d86a9][ref-84f10b56b393][^ref-7b4b2b7753fb]
Scope of Application¶
A Cochrane antibiotic-treatment review reports defined trial eligibility, independent screening and extraction, risk-of-bias appraisal and certainty ratings. A Campbell school-law-enforcement review specifies comparison groups and outcomes, dates its search, and warns that observed associations may not establish causation. The same process fits unlike research domains with different evidence limitations.[ref-cad7c3725350][ref-ada3d4c5cbec]
Clarity¶
A narrative essay can select illuminating studies without trying to identify the eligible body of evidence. A systematic review must expose the rules used to choose and judge that body. Following PRISMA alone is insufficient: its authors specify that it guides reporting, not conduct or methodological quality appraisal.[^ref-09ef4d2ea52c]
Manages Complexity¶
Protocols and documented searches coordinate many reports, outcomes and designs. Appraisal prevents treating weak and strong studies as interchangeable; synthesis must preserve heterogeneity and uncertainty rather than force one pooled number.
Abstract Reasoning¶
Define the question and eligibility, search appropriate sources, screen and extract by stated rules, assess risk of bias, then choose a suitable narrative or quantitative synthesis. Ask whether sources and dates are reproducible and whether included studies can support the intended inference.[ref-ac43538d86a9][ref-84f10b56b393]
Knowledge Transfer¶
The method transfers from clinical trials to social-policy evaluations; their appraisal standards and causal threats differ. Literature Review is the broader genus: its topic-organized forms need not meet the systematic method's auditable selection and appraisal conditions.

Neighborhood in Abstraction Space¶
Systematic Review sits in a sparse region of the domain-specific corpus (74th percentile for distinctiveness): few abstractions share its structure, so a faithful description tends to retrieve it precisely.
