Tellability¶
The context-dependent quality that makes an event or sequence sufficiently remarkable, consequential and audience-relevant to warrant narration.
Core Idea¶
Tellability depends on audience, setting, genre and performance, can conflict with credibility and is produced through framing rather than residing only in the event. A narrator selects a departure from expected routine, frames its stakes and evaluation for a particular audience and manages detail and suspense so listeners recognize why the account is worth telling. The abstraction is therefore identified by a declared carrier, a transformation or constraint over that carrier, and an invariant that tells an analyst whether the named structure is genuinely present.
Scope of Application¶
Tellability belongs to narrative studies and is useful where the analyst can specify the typed narrative studies carrier, including objects, relations, parameters, conventions, evidence, boundaries, and comparison targets, then evaluate the narrator audience and interactional setting, candidate events, background norm and deviation, stakes or consequence, narrative framing and evaluation, credibility or reportability constraints, degree of elaboration and audience uptake and genre and cultural variation are explicit. Tellability compresses them into the roles in the structural signature. That compression permits comparison across instances without erasing the variables that determine validity. It also exposes which details may be varied safely and which are constitutive.
