Thought-Terminating Cliché

A stock verbal formula that closes an open inquiry not by answering it but by exploiting a social uptake norm that treats producing the formula as having discharged the obligation to reply.

Core Idea

A thought-terminating cliché is a stock verbal formula that shuts down an inquiry rather than engaging it. Coined by Robert Jay Lifton (1961), it names a three-part device: an open inquiry, a stock formula the discourse community recognizes as a settled answer to that category of question ("it is what it is," "trust the science"), and an uptake norm that treats producing the formula as having discharged the obligation to reply.

Scope of Application

Its home domain is unusually wide — all of human linguistic discourse — yet a single substrate, running as the same mechanism across it.

Clarity

The label separates three moves lay talk collapses into one: a substantive response, an acknowledged refusal that leaves the inquiry open, and a socially licensed terminator that closes it without engaging. It also relocates the device from logic to pragmatics — not a fallacy to refute but a norm-exploitation to contest.

Manages Complexity

A vast range of superficially unrelated phenomena — cult slogans, family closures, bureaucratic deflection, self-talk — compress to one three-part mechanism. The analyst stops tracking who said what in which setting and tracks three parameters: is there a live inquiry, is the response a category-general formula, does the local norm reward or punish pressing on.
