Translatio studii¶
A medieval historiographical topos portraying learning and cultural authority as moving in a linear succession from one geographic center to another.
Core Idea¶
The schema links transfer of learning with succession of empire, arranging favored civilizations along a providential or westward chain and legitimating the current center as heir to earlier knowledge.
