The Westermarck effect is the phenomenon in which people raised in close domestic proximity during early childhood — roughly the first six years — develop a persistent adult sexual aversion to one another, independent of actual relatedness. It is a form of negative imprinting: the co-residence window is a sensitive period during which companions are registered and marked with aversion. The operative cue is spatiotemporal proximity, exploited as a relatedness-independent proxy for sibship in inbreeding avoidance.

Clarity¶
