Wise fool¶
A literary and dramatic paradox in which a character dismissed as foolish, naive, marginal, or comic voices insight that more learned or powerful characters cannot perceive.
Core Idea¶
The wise fool reverses status and epistemic authority, using innocence, license, humor, outsider position, faith, or apparent irrationality to expose hypocrisy and reveal moral or existential truth. A narrative establishes low competence or status, grants the figure unusual freedom or perspective, stages an utterance or action that reframes the conflict, and lets audience knowledge recognize the inversion before or instead of other characters.
