Zeigarnik Effect¶
The finding that interrupted or unfinished tasks are recalled better than completed ones, because beginning a task installs a persisting goal-tension that keeps its representation activated until completion discharges it — scaled by goal-importance and gated on the interruption reading as a pause.
Core Idea¶
The Zeigarnik effect is the memory and motivation phenomenon in which interrupted or unfinished tasks are recalled better than completed ones. Bluma Zeigarnik documented it in 1927, drawing on observations by Kurt Lewin that restaurant waiters could reproduce in detail the contents of unpaid orders but lost access to that information once a bill was settled, then confirmed the pattern experimentally: subjects interrupted partway through a series of brief tasks recalled the interrupted ones approximately twice as often as the completed ones.
Lewin's field-theoretic interpretation, which Zeigarnik adopted, frames the mechanism in terms of goal-state tension: beginning a task creates a psychological tension state — a persisting activation of the task's representation — that sustains heightened cognitive availability of the task until it is discharged by completion. Completing the task releases the tension and with it the privileged activation; the representation subsides to the level of any other past event. An interrupted task leaves the tension unresolved, maintaining the representation in a state of elevated accessibility that drives intrusive recall, spontaneous between-task processing, and resumed attention upon opportunity. The effect is modulated by ego-involvement and goal-importance: tasks in which the subject is personally invested produce larger recall asymmetries than routine or low-stakes tasks, consistent with the tension-system account in which goal importance determines the magnitude of the initial tension state. Boundary conditions established by later replication include the dependence on participants believing the task has a genuine completion criterion and on the interruption being perceived as a pause rather than a permanent termination of the goal.

What It Is Not¶
- Not the claim that recently completed work is most accessible. The finding inverts that common-sense expectation: unfinished work is held more accessibly, because the system sustains it in service of finishing. Completion is not memory-neutral but an active release — crossing the completion criterion discharges the privileged activation and the representation subsides to the level of any ordinary memory.
- Not a memory quirk. Intrusive recall, spontaneous between-task processing, and attention that resumes on opportunity are the predictable signature of an undischarged goal, not glitches of the memory system. They are read as evidence of an open loop, so the question is "what is the tension still tracking, and what would count as its release?" — not "why is recall behaving oddly?"
- Not unconditional. The effect gates on two readable conditions and scales with a third: the subject must believe the task has a genuine completion criterion, the interruption must be read as a pause rather than a permanent abandonment, and magnitude rises with ego-involvement and goal-importance. A weak or absent effect on a routine, low-stakes task is therefore a prediction of the account, not a failure of it.
- Not resource depletion or decision fatigue. Zeigarnik is sustained allocation to an unfinished goal, not resources running down with use (depletion) or decision quality declining under cumulative load (fatigue). The signature is an asymmetry in recall and re-engagement between interrupted and completed tasks, not a decrement that accrues as effort is spent.
- Not the "closure" of mathematics or gestalt perception. The Zeigarnik "closure" means goal-state release; it shares only the word with mathematical closure (a set being closed under an operation) and gestalt closure (the perceptual filling-in of incomplete forms). These are name collisions, not cross-domain instances of the same mechanism.
- Not the substrate-free goal-system pattern. The open-loop-tension structure — an unmet goal keeping its representation active until closed or credibly substituted — needs an agent that has a goal and discharges its sustaining on completion. Non-goal-directed physical, engineered, or biological systems have nothing to install or release such tension, so "the Zeigarnik effect" of an unfilled queue borrows the unfinished-business shape while dropping the mechanism; the portable lesson belongs to the (latent) goal-system parent.
Scope of Application¶
The Zeigarnik effect lives across memory-and-motivation psychology and its applied neighbours wherever a goal-directed cognitive agent maintains a task representation in service of finishing it; its reach is bounded to that goal-pursuing substrate (the open-loop-tension structure travels only as far as goal-systems under a latent goal-system parent, and the "closure" homonyms of mathematics and gestalt perception share only the word).
- Memory and motivation psychology — the canonical home, underwriting models of goal pursuit (Lewin, Atkinson, Kuhl) and intrusive cognition (Klinger).
- CBT and rumination research — unfinished emotional concerns producing persistent intrusive thought, with therapeutic "closure" techniques that ritually mark a concern complete to release the tension.
- Productivity systems — GTD-style "open loops" theory, which explicitly models the tension and prescribes externalising unfinished tasks to a list to discharge it.
- Narrative design and entertainment — cliffhangers, serial TV, and episodic games that install incompletion on purpose to drive re-engagement.

Clarity¶
The effect's clarifying contribution is that completion is not memory-neutral — it is an active release. Common sense assumes that recently finished work is the most accessible, since it was just done; the Zeigarnik finding inverts this by showing that unfinished work is held more accessibly, precisely because the cognitive system is sustaining it in service of finishing. Naming the effect makes legible that a goal is not a static record but a tension state with reduce-on-completion dynamics: beginning a task installs a persisting activation, and crossing the completion criterion discharges it, letting the representation subside to the level of any ordinary memory. This reframes intrusive recall and spontaneous between-task processing not as memory quirks but as the predictable signature of an undischarged goal — and it sharpens the practitioner's question from "why does this concern keep returning?" to "what is the tension state still tracking, and what would count as its release?"
Within the tension-system account the label also clarifies which variables move the effect, separating the load-bearing ones from incidental task features. Magnitude scales with ego-involvement and goal-importance — the size of the initial tension — so a weak or absent effect for routine, low-stakes tasks is not a failure of the phenomenon but a prediction of it. And the boundary conditions become principled rather than ad hoc: the activation persists only if the subject believes the task has a genuine completion criterion and reads the interruption as a pause rather than a permanent abandonment of the goal. That distinction — pause versus termination — is exactly what the practitioner must check before expecting (or trying to relieve) the heightened accessibility, and it is invisible without the tension framing.
Manages Complexity¶
The phenomena the Zeigarnik effect is invoked to cover look, on their surface, unrelated: a waiter's vanishing recall of a settled bill, intrusive rumination over an unresolved worry, the pull of a cliffhanger that drives a viewer back to the next episode, the mental relief of writing an undone task onto a list, the warm-up cost of resuming cleanly-finished work versus the running start of work left mid-sentence. Catalogued as separate facts — a memory quirk here, a productivity tip there, a narrative trick elsewhere — each would need its own account. The effect compresses the lot onto one state variable the analyst can track: the goal-tension attached to a task, installed when the task is begun and discharged when its completion criterion is crossed. With that single variable, the qualitative behavior of any case reads off directly. Is there an undischarged tension state? Then predict the whole syndrome at once — elevated recall, intrusive between-task processing, attention that resumes on opportunity. Has the tension been released by completion? Then predict the representation subsiding to the level of any ordinary memory, accessibility gone. Instead of a separate theory for memory, for rumination, for re-engagement, the analyst tracks one thing — is the loop open or closed — and the cluster of symptoms follows from its state.
The compression also tells the analyst which parameters move the effect and which are noise, collapsing a potentially open-ended list of task features to a small set. Magnitude is governed by the size of the initial tension, which scales with ego-involvement and goal-importance — so a weak or absent effect on a routine, low-stakes task is not an anomaly to be explained away but a prediction read off a low tension value. And the presence of the effect at all gates on two readable conditions: the subject must believe the task has a genuine completion criterion, and must read the interruption as a pause rather than a permanent abandonment of the goal. That last distinction converts the boundary conditions from an ad hoc list of "when it does and doesn't replicate" into a single check the practitioner makes before expecting, exploiting, or relieving the accessibility. So the branch structure is compact: track whether a tension state exists, how large it is (importance/involvement), and whether the interruption counts as a pause — and from those three the recall asymmetry, the intrusive processing, the re-engagement pull, and the route to relief (supply a completion or a credible substitute) all follow, without re-deriving the mechanism for each new task, therapy, or piece of serial entertainment.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The Zeigarnik effect licenses reasoning that treats a goal as a tension state — installed on beginning a task, discharged on crossing its completion criterion — so the practitioner reasons from whether a loop is open or closed, and how large its tension is, to a whole syndrome of recall and re-engagement, and back from that syndrome to the undischarged goal driving it.
Diagnostic (read an open loop from its symptoms, not from recency). The defining inference goes from elevated accessibility back to an undischarged goal. A task recalled better than a recently completed one, intrusive thoughts that keep returning, attention that resumes the moment opportunity allows — these are read as the signature of a goal-tension state still being sustained, not as memory quirks and not as evidence that the work was "fresh." The inference inverts common sense: because the system holds unfinished work in service of finishing, unfinished is diagnosed as more accessible, so a settled bill the waiter has forgotten is read as a discharged tension and an unpaid one he recalls in detail as an open loop. The practitioner's question sharpens from "why does this concern keep returning?" to "what is the tension state still tracking, and what would count as its release?" The move runs heightened recall/rumination → an open goal loop, never heightened recall → mere recency.
Interventionist (open or close the loop, predict the accessibility change). Because completion is an active release, manipulations of loop state have forecasts. Mark a task complete — finish it, delegate it, ritually close it, or externalize it to a list as a credible substitute — and its memory accessibility and rumination-driving power are predicted to fall, the representation subsiding to ordinary levels; this is the mechanism behind closure techniques in therapy and open-loop externalization in productivity systems. Conversely, manufacture incompletion — a cliffhanger, a save-state, a partial reveal, a lesson ended on an unresolved problem — and continued attention and return-engagement are predicted to follow, because an undischarged tension is being installed on purpose. Raise ego-involvement or goal-importance and the predicted magnitude grows. Each manipulation pairs opening or closing the loop (or scaling its tension) with a predicted change in accessibility and re-engagement.
Boundary-drawing (open loop only; importance scales it; pause, not termination). The concept fixes its applicability through three principled conditions rather than an ad hoc replication list. The effect is scoped to a genuine open loop — the subject must believe the task has a real completion criterion — so a task with no defined finish is outside the regime. Its magnitude is governed by the size of the initial tension, which scales with ego-involvement and goal-importance, so a weak or absent effect on a routine, low-stakes task is a prediction of the account, not a failure of it. And the activation persists only if the interruption is read as a pause rather than a permanent abandonment of the goal — the pause-versus-termination distinction is the single check the practitioner makes before expecting, exploiting, or relieving the accessibility. Predictive / branch-ordering. From three readable quantities — is a tension state present, how large (importance/involvement), and does the interruption count as a pause — the analyst forecasts the full cluster before observing it: an open, high-importance, paused loop predicts elevated recall, intrusive between-task processing, and a resumption pull; a closed loop predicts accessibility gone; a low-importance or terminated case predicts little effect. Recall asymmetry, rumination, re-engagement, and the route to relief all read off loop state, tension magnitude, and the pause check.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within memory-and-motivation psychology and its applied neighbours the effect transfers as mechanism, because the goal-tension state (installed on beginning, discharged on completion) and the three readable parameters (is a loop open, how large is its tension, does the interruption count as a pause) apply unchanged across the cases. It underwrites goal-pursuit and intrusive-cognition models (Lewin, Atkinson, Kuhl, Klinger); CBT and rumination work exploit it through closure techniques that ritually mark a concern complete; productivity systems (GTD's "open loops") explicitly model the tension and prescribe externalizing unfinished tasks to release it; and narrative design, advertising, and "leave it open" pedagogy install incompletion on purpose to drive re-engagement. The vocabulary (goal-tension, open/closed loop, release on completion, ego-involvement amplifier, pause versus termination) and the bidirectional prescription (close a loop to relieve accessibility, open one to drive return) carry intact across that cluster because the substrate is constant: a goal-directed cognitive agent maintaining a task representation in service of finishing it.
Beyond goal-pursuing minds the literal transfer stops, and the honest classification is analogy (A) for any non-cognitive invocation. The open-loop-tension structure needs an agent that has a goal, sustains a representation toward it, and discharges that sustaining on completion; non-cognitive systems (physical, engineered, or non-goal-directed biological) have nothing that installs or releases such tension, so calling an incomplete physical process or an unfilled queue a "Zeigarnik effect" borrows the unfinished-business shape while dropping the only mechanism that produces the recall asymmetry, the rumination, and the re-engagement pull. That should be marked as metaphor, not the mechanism travelling.
The genuine beyond-the-effect report is shared abstract mechanism (B) lifting to a latent parent: the structural pattern — uncompleted goal states maintain heightened activation, and completion releases the activation — is absorbed into the broader goal-system / working-memory-persistence family, of which the Zeigarnik effect would be the canonical psychology exemplar were a dedicated "open-loop tension" prime ever promoted (alongside Lewin's field theory and GTD's open-loop framework). So when the cross-context lesson is wanted — "an unmet goal keeps its representation active and pulls attention back until it is closed or credibly substituted" — it should be carried by that goal-system parent, not by "Zeigarnik effect," whose distinctive cargo (the completed-versus-interrupted recall asymmetry, the ego-involvement scaling, the pause-versus-termination gate, the waiter-and-laboratory provenance) is memory-and-motivation furniture that does not travel. And the boundary needs guarding against pure homonymy: the Zeigarnik "closure" (goal-state release) shares only the word with mathematical closure (set-under-operation containment) and gestalt closure (perceptual filling-in of incomplete forms) — these are name collisions, not cross-domain instances of the same mechanism, and conflating them would import a goal-tension reading where none exists. Examples¶
Canonical¶
The founding demonstration is Bluma Zeigarnik's 1927 work, prompted by Kurt Lewin's observation of Viennese café waiters: a waiter could recall the exact contents of an unpaid, still-open order in detail, yet once the bill was settled he lost access to it, as if the memory had been released the moment the transaction closed. Zeigarnik turned this into an experiment. Participants were given a series of short tasks — puzzles, modeling, arithmetic — and allowed to finish some while being interrupted partway through others before moving on. When later asked to recall which tasks they had worked on, participants named the interrupted tasks about twice as often as the completed ones. The unfinished tasks, held in mind in service of finishing, remained far more accessible than the finished ones, which had subsided to the level of ordinary memory.
Mapped back: Each short task with a real endpoint is the goal-directed task; the ones cut off partway are in the interruption state, leaving the goal-tension state installed. The roughly two-to-one better recall of interrupted tasks is the core of the open-loop syndrome, and the settled restaurant bill the waiter forgets is the release-on-completion discharging the tension.
Applied / In Practice¶
Serial-entertainment writers deploy the effect deliberately through cliffhangers. Television episodes, serialized novels, and episodic video games routinely end a chapter mid-crisis — a character in peril, a question posed but unanswered, a reveal cut off — leaving the audience's goal of resolution undischarged. That open loop drives intrusive anticipation between episodes and a strong pull to return for the next installment, which is precisely why streaming platforms structure "season finales" on unresolved threads and why "binge-watching" is self-sustaining: each episode closes one loop while opening another, so the viewer is never left at a clean stopping point. Advertisers use the same lever with unfinished jingles and story-driven campaigns that resolve only later. The tactic works because the narrative supplies a genuine, believed completion criterion (the story will resolve) and the break reads as a pause, not an abandonment.
Mapped back: The cut-off episode manufactures the interruption state on purpose, installing the goal-tension state whose open-loop syndrome is exactly the between-episode anticipation and return pull writers want. That the audience believes the story will resolve and reads the break as temporary satisfies the pause-vs-termination gate — abandon that belief (a show cancelled mid-arc) and the tension dissipates rather than driving re-engagement.
Structural Tensions¶
T1: Completion as active release versus recency (unfinished held more accessibly). The effect inverts common sense: not the recently finished but the unfinished task is the more accessible, because the system sustains an open goal in service of finishing it, and completion is an active discharge rather than a memory-neutral event. The tension is that "recently done, therefore fresh in mind" is a powerful default that the effect contradicts, so an analyst reading heightened accessibility as recency will look in the wrong place for its cause. The waiter forgets the settled bill and remembers the open one — recency would predict the reverse. The whole diagnostic value depends on treating completion as a release that drops accessibility, which runs against the intuition that finishing something is what makes it memorable. Diagnostic: Is this heightened accessibility being read as recency (recently done) or as an open, undischarged goal loop (not yet completed) — opposite predictions the surface does not settle?
T2: The open loop as engagement engine versus rumination burden (one mechanism, relief and torment). The identical goal-tension mechanism powers opposite applications: deliberately installed incompletion drives re-engagement (cliffhangers, unfinished jingles, "leave it open" pedagogy), while spontaneously undischarged loops drive intrusive rumination and anxious preoccupation the CBT literature seeks to relieve. The tension is that there is no separate "productive" and "pathological" version to keep apart — the same sustained activation that a novelist exploits to pull viewers back is what torments a ruminator who cannot close a concern, so the effect is a tool and an affliction depending only on whether the open loop serves or harasses the agent. Exploiting it to drive attention and relieving it to restore peace are the same lever pushed in opposite directions. Diagnostic: Is the open loop here being installed to drive desired re-engagement, or is it an unwanted tension whose intrusive pull calls for closure or a credible substitute?
T3: Pause versus termination (the gate that decides whether tension persists). The activation persists only if the interruption is read as a pause — a temporary break in a goal still believed reachable — not as permanent abandonment, at which point the tension dissipates rather than driving recall or re-engagement. This gate is load-bearing and subtle: the same objective interruption produces the full open-loop syndrome or nothing depending on the agent's interpretation of whether the goal survives. The tension is that a manipulator relying on the effect (a serial writer, an advertiser) depends on the audience continuing to believe resolution will come, so anything that reads the break as termination (a show cancelled mid-arc, a goal declared hopeless) collapses the very tension the tactic needs. The effect lives entirely on a believed-reachable completion criterion. Diagnostic: Does the agent read this interruption as a pause in a still-reachable goal (tension persists) or as permanent abandonment (tension dissipates)?
T4: Importance-scaled and gated versus its own falsifiability (nulls always explainable). The account is principled about when the effect is weak or absent: magnitude scales with ego-involvement and goal-importance, and presence gates on a believed completion criterion and a pause reading — so a null on a routine, low-stakes task is a prediction, not a failure. This turns an ad hoc replication record into structured boundary conditions. But the same flexibility is a hazard: any failed prediction can be retro-explained as low importance, an absent completion criterion, or an interruption read as termination, so the effect risks being hard to falsify. The tension is that the scaling-and-gating conditions which make the account principled also supply ready-made excuses for every null, blurring the line between a genuine boundary condition and an unfalsifiable escape. Diagnostic: Is a weak or absent effect here explained by an independently established condition (low importance, no completion criterion, termination reading), or retrofitted after the fact to save the account?
T5: The effect versus its neighbours and homonyms (distinct mechanisms, shared words). The Zeigarnik effect is sustained allocation to an unfinished goal — and it is routinely confused with phenomena it merely neighbours or shares a word with. It is not resource depletion (resources running down with use) or decision fatigue (quality declining under cumulative load); its signature is a recall-and-re-engagement asymmetry between interrupted and completed tasks, not a decrement that accrues with effort. And its "closure" (goal-state release) shares only the word with mathematical closure (set-under-operation containment) and gestalt closure (perceptual filling-in). T6: Autonomy versus reduction (a memory-motivation effect or an instance of the goal-system open loop). The Zeigarnik effect is a named finding with proprietary cargo — the completed-versus-interrupted recall asymmetry, the ego-involvement scaling, the pause-versus-termination gate, the waiter-and-laboratory provenance — and within human cognition and its CBT, productivity, and narrative applications it transfers as mechanism intact. But its portable structure — an unmet goal keeps its representation active until closed or credibly substituted — is a latent goal-system / open-loop-tension parent (alongside Lewin's field theory and GTD's open-loop framework), of which the effect would be the psychology exemplar. Beyond goal-pursuing minds it does not travel as mechanism at all: a physical process or unfilled queue has nothing to install or release such tension, so those uses are metaphor. Structural–Framed Character¶
The Zeigarnik effect sits at the mixed-structural position on the structural–framed spectrum — well onto the structural side, alongside the other memory-motivation entries, held off the pole by goal-tension vocabulary and a substrate bound to goal-pursuing minds. Four of the five criteria point structural. Its evaluative_weight is nil: an unfinished task held in heightened accessibility is neither good nor bad, and "Zeigarnik effect" renders no verdict — the same open-loop tension is an engagement engine for a novelist and a burden for a ruminator (its own T2), which is exactly the mark of a neutral mechanism rather than a normative label. Its institutional_origin is none: the goal-tension state and its release on completion are facts about how a goal-directed cognitive system sustains a task representation, documented by Zeigarnik in 1927 from Lewin's field-theoretic account — discovered, not an artifact of any convention. And it is not human-practice-bound: an interrupted task stays more accessible in a goal-pursuing mind whether or not any psychologist runs a recall test — remove every experimenter and the open loop still drives intrusive recall and re-engagement, so nothing dissolves when the scholarly practice is withdrawn. Within its range cross-context reuse is recognition, not import: the goal-tension state and its three readable parameters (loop open/closed, tension magnitude, pause-vs-termination) carry as the same mechanism across goal-pursuit and intrusive-cognition models, CBT closure techniques, GTD open-loop productivity, and narrative cliffhangers. The one qualification is that its substrate is a goal-directed agent (a mind that has goals and discharges their sustaining on completion) rather than inert nature, so it runs on minds rather than fully observer-free — but that is a natural substrate, which keeps it structural, merely narrower than isostasy.

Structural Core vs. Domain Accent¶
This section decides why the Zeigarnik effect is a domain-specific abstraction and not a prime, and it carries the case for its domain-specificity — there is no separate section for that.
What is skeletal (could lift toward a cross-domain prime). Strip the memory-and-motivation idiom and a thin relational structure survives: an uncompleted goal state maintains heightened activation of its representation until completion — or a credible substitute — releases it. The portable pieces are abstract — a goal an agent has taken up, a persisting activation installed on beginning it, and a discharge triggered by crossing a completion criterion or a credible stand-in for one. That skeleton is substrate-portable, but only across a specific kind of substrate: agents that have goals. The entry is candid that no dedicated catalog prime yet houses it, so it instantiates a latent goal-system / open-loop-tension parent (the family Lewin's field theory and GTD's open-loop framework also belong to), of which the Zeigarnik effect would be the psychology exemplar were that prime promoted. That unmet-goal-keeps-its-representation-active core is what the effect shares with any open-loop goal system — not what makes it the Zeigarnik effect.
What is domain-bound. The distinctive content is memory-and-motivation furniture and none of it survives extraction intact: the completed-versus-interrupted recall asymmetry (interrupted tasks recalled roughly twice as often); the ego-involvement / goal-importance amplifier that scales the tension's magnitude; the pause-versus-termination gate that makes persistence conditional on the interruption being read as temporary; the open-loop syndrome of intrusive recall, between-task processing, and resumption-on-opportunity; and the waiter-and-laboratory provenance. These are the worked vocabulary, the instruments, and the empirical cases the field studies — Zeigarnik's interrupted tasks, CBT closure rituals, GTD externalization, cliffhangers, "leave it open" pedagogy. The decisive test: remove the goal-directed cognitive agent — take a non-goal-directed physical, engineered, or biological system, an "unfilled queue" or an "incomplete process" — and there is nothing to install or release goal-tension, so calling it a Zeigarnik effect borrows the unfinished-business shape while dropping the only mechanism that produces the recall asymmetry, the rumination, and the re-engagement pull. And the "closure" it trades in shares only the word with mathematical closure and gestalt closure — name collisions, not instances. The effect is constituted by the goal-pursuing-mind substrate the prime bar asks it to shed.
Why this does not clear the prime bar. A prime is a relational structure whose vocabulary travels and whose cross-domain transfer is recognition of the same mechanism, not analogy. The Zeigarnik effect's transfer is bimodal. Within memory-and-motivation psychology and its applied neighbours it travels intact as mechanism — the goal-tension state and its three readable parameters (loop open/closed, tension magnitude, pause-versus-termination) carry unchanged across goal-pursuit and intrusive-cognition models, CBT closure techniques, GTD open-loop productivity, and narrative cliffhangers, which are one mechanism, not analogies. Beyond goal-pursuing minds the literal transfer stops entirely: non-cognitive systems have no goal to sustain, so those invocations are pure metaphor, and the "closure" homonyms carry nothing of the mechanism. Crucially, when the cross-context lesson — "an unmet goal keeps its representation active and pulls attention back until it is closed or credibly substituted" — is genuinely wanted, it is already carried, in more general form, by the (latent) goal-system / open-loop-tension parent, of which this effect is the psychology exemplar. So the cross-domain reach belongs to that parent; the Zeigarnik effect is the memory-and-motivation instance that specializes it with a recall asymmetry, an ego-involvement scaler, and a pause-versus-termination gate, and its distinctive cargo is exactly the part that does not travel. It clears the domain-specific bar comfortably across human cognition but sits below the prime bar, because its only substrate-spanning content is already held by the (latent) parent it instantiates — indeed the entry flags that parent as the right slot for the portable structure, distinct from this named effect.

Ovsiankina effect. The closely-related finding (Maria Ovsiankina, Zeigarnik's colleague in the Lewin group) that people spontaneously resume interrupted tasks when given the chance. It shares the open-goal-tension mechanism but concerns resumption behaviour, where the Zeigarnik effect concerns superior recall of the interrupted task. Tell: is the observed outcome that the unfinished task is remembered better (Zeigarnik), or that the agent goes back and picks it up again (Ovsiankina)? Two signatures of the same open loop.

Recency effect. The memory finding that recently-encountered items are more accessible. Zeigarnik inverts the naive recency expectation: the unfinished task is held more accessibly than the recently-completed one, because completion is an active release of tension, not a boost. Tell: is the accessibility explained by how recently the task was done (recency, which would favour the completed one), or by whether its goal loop is still open (Zeigarnik, which favours the unfinished one)? The waiter forgetting the just-settled bill is the tell against recency.

Resource depletion / decision fatigue. A decrement that accrues as effort is spent — resources running down, or decision quality declining under cumulative load. The Zeigarnik signature is instead an asymmetry in recall and re-engagement between interrupted and completed tasks, sustained allocation to an open goal, not a running-out. Tell: is the phenomenon a decline accumulating with effort (depletion/fatigue), or a heightened accessibility of specifically the unfinished task (Zeigarnik)? They can co-occur in the same tired, preoccupied person but are different mechanisms.

Mathematical closure and gestalt closure. Pure homonyms: mathematical closure is a set being closed under an operation; gestalt closure is the perceptual filling-in of incomplete forms. The Zeigarnik "closure" means goal-state release — discharging a tension state. These share only the word. Tell: is "closure" naming a set-operation property, a perceptual completion of a figure, or the release of an open goal's tension (only the last is Zeigarnik)? Conflating them imports a goal-tension reading where none exists.
