Zeigarnik Effect¶
The finding that interrupted or unfinished tasks are recalled better than completed ones, because beginning a task installs a persisting goal-tension that keeps its representation activated until completion discharges it — scaled by goal-importance and gated on the interruption reading as a pause.

The Zeigarnik effect is the phenomenon in which interrupted or unfinished tasks are recalled better than completed ones — the waiter who recalls unpaid orders but forgets settled ones. Lewin's field-theoretic account frames it as goal-state tension: beginning a task installs a persisting activation of its representation, sustaining heightened accessibility until completion discharges it. An interrupted task leaves the tension unresolved, driving intrusive recall and resumed attention. Magnitude scales with ego-involvement and goal-importance.

Clarity¶
The clarifying contribution is that completion is not memory-neutral but an active release. Common sense assumes recently finished work is most accessible; the finding inverts this, because the system sustains unfinished work in service of finishing. Naming the effect makes legible that a goal is a tension state with reduce-on-completion dynamics, reframing intrusive recall as the predictable signature of an undischarged goal and sharpening "why does this concern keep returning?" into "what would count as its release?"
Manages Complexity¶
Surface-unrelated phenomena — a waiter's vanishing recall, rumination, a cliffhanger's pull, the relief of a to-do list — compress onto one state variable: the goal-tension attached to a task, installed on beginning and discharged on completion. From whether the loop is open or closed the whole syndrome reads off. Three readable parameters govern it — is a tension state present, how large (importance), and does the interruption count as a pause — converting the boundary conditions from an ad hoc replication list into a single check.
Abstract Reasoning¶
The reasoning treats a goal as a tension state, running diagnostically from elevated accessibility back to an open loop (inverting the recency reading) and interventionally from opening or closing the loop to a predicted accessibility change. A boundary-drawing move fixes three principled conditions — a genuine open loop, importance scaling, pause-not-termination — and separates the effect from depletion, fatigue, and gestalt closure.
Knowledge Transfer¶
Within memory-and-motivation psychology and its CBT, productivity, and narrative applications the effect transfers as mechanism on the constant substrate of a goal-directed agent holding an open loop. Beyond goal-pursuing minds literal transfer stops: non-cognitive invocations are analogy, since nothing installs or releases tension. The genuine report is shared abstract mechanism lifting to a latent goal-system parent that carries "an unmet goal keeps its representation active until closed." The mathematical and gestalt "closures" are mere homonyms.
