Supply-chain method — instantiates Path Redundancy Provisioning

Qualifies a second route, logistics provider, or supply path so critical inputs can still reach the system if the main route is blocked.

A second vendor name on a slide is not a second supply route. Alternate Supplier Route qualifies a genuinely independent lane by which a critical physical input can keep arriving — a different source, carrier, port, and customs path — sized to carry at least the minimum flow the line needs, and kept warm enough that switching to it is a purchase order rather than a project. Its defining concern is the whole lane, end to end: the part specification, the logistics, the authority to ship, the quality sign-off, and the lead time all have to work under the exact conditions that make the primary lane unavailable. Where a generic "dual sourcing" instinct stops at having two vendors, this mechanism asks whether the alternate lane is reachable, capacitated, and diverse in the ways that matter, before the primary one is cut.

Example

A brake-system manufacturer depends on one specialized microcontroller, bought from a single fabricator and shipped through a single Pacific port on one freight forwarder. That is one lane, and a typhoon that closes the port stops the assembly line within days. The firm qualifies an alternate route: the same part number stocked by an authorized distributor in a different region, routed through a different port on a different forwarder, with a standing purchase agreement and a pre-cleared customs broker. They deliberately let a small share of normal volume flow through this lane so it stays live — staff know the paperwork, the quality team has approved incoming lots, and the distributor holds a buffer. When the typhoon hits, the alternate lane carries enough microcontrollers to keep the line running at reduced rate until the primary port reopens. The lane's value was invisible on the other three hundred days; it was decisive on the fourth.

How it works

The distinguishing work is qualification, not selection. The mechanism names the critical input, then builds a second lane that is complete and diverse:

  • Qualify the whole lane. Not just an alternate source but the source plus its route: carrier, port, customs, and the authority and quality checks that let its goods actually enter the line.
  • Engineer diversity deliberately. The alternate is chosen to differ from the primary on the axes that carry the threat — a different fabrication site, a different port and carrier, a different sub-tier if the fragility hides upstream.
  • Size to minimum viable flow. The lane need not match full normal throughput; it must carry enough of the critical input to keep the line alive at a defined reduced rate.
  • Hold a warm posture. A standing agreement and a live commercial relationship keep the alternate a real lane rather than a name on a supplier list — a provisioning stance, distinct from the periodic drill that later tests whether it still works.

Tuning parameters

  • Dual-source split — how much normal volume flows through the alternate. More keeps it warm and proven; less saves cost but risks a cold, stale lane.
  • Independence depth — different carrier only, versus different port, region, or sub-tier supplier. Deeper independence survives broader shocks but costs more to qualify.
  • Reserve level — whether the lane carries minimum-viable, priority-only, or full volume. Higher reserve shortens the disruption but ties up capacity.
  • Qualification rigor — paper approval versus periodic test lots. Test lots catch drift in the part revision or process but consume engineering time.
  • Warm-vs-cold posture — a standing agreement and live buffer, versus a dormant qualified contract activated on demand. Warmer switches faster; colder is cheaper to hold.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that a blocked port, a failed vendor, or a regional shock no longer starves the line — the critical input keeps arriving on a route already proven to work. It also surfaces hidden concentration: the act of qualifying an alternate often reveals that two "different" suppliers converge on the same sub-tier plant or the same customs chokepoint.

Its central failure mode is false redundancy — two lanes that share a hidden failure domain, such as both suppliers shipping through the same port or buying wafers from the same fab, so a single event takes them both. This is the sole-sourcing trap wearing a disguise; the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake exposed exactly this, when nominally diverse automotive supply chains turned out to funnel through common upstream sources.[1] The other trap is holding cost: because the alternate looks idle, teams let its qualification lapse — the contract expires, the part revision moves on, the buffer is drawn down — so the lane is dead when it is finally called. The guarding discipline is to qualify the alternate against the specific failure scenario it must survive and to keep a live trickle of volume flowing through it.

How it implements the components

Alternate Supplier Route fills the provision-a-diverse-input-lane side of the archetype — not the live selection or monitoring:

  • critical_flow_or_connection — names the specific input (the microcontroller) whose arrival must not stop, which is what makes the redundancy targeted rather than blanket.
  • alternate_path — the qualified second lane end to end: source, carrier, port, customs, and quality sign-off.
  • capacity_reserve — the lane is sized to carry at least the minimum critical volume, so it is a real substitute and not a token trickle when it matters.
  • path_diversity_criteria — defines what makes the alternate genuinely different (site, carrier, port, sub-tier) so it does not fail with the primary.

It does not carry a live availability read or decide which lane runs in the moment (path_health_signal, routing_rule) — that live control belongs to Out-of-Band Channel and Backup Route Plan; and the recurring exercise that proves the lane still works under stress (maintenance_and_testing_cycle) is Path Readiness Drill, not this qualification step.
