Annotation Overlay¶
Explanatory annotation layer — instantiates Focal Emphasis Design
Marks a chosen feature directly on the original image, map, or chart — naming and bounding it in place — so the audience sees exactly which element matters without losing the picture around it.
An Annotation Overlay is a layer of explanatory marks — arrows, circles, region shading, leader-line labels — drawn on top of an existing image, map, diagram, screenshot, or chart. Its distinctive move is that it emphasizes by pointing in place: the base visual is left untouched beneath a semi-transparent layer, so the audience learns which feature to look at and where its edges are without the picture being redrawn or the surrounding context stripped away. Where a caption sits beside a figure, the overlay sits on it, binding the emphasis to an exact location. It answers "which one, and where" — not "why it matters" (that is a Callout's job) and not by making the pixels themselves louder (that is Contrast Emphasis's).
Example¶
A chest radiograph is used in a radiology teaching set. The film is busy — ribs, vessels, the heart border — and an 8 mm nodule in the right upper lobe is exactly the kind of thing a new trainee's eye slides past (change blindness at work). The overlay adds a thin arrow, a dashed circle bounding the nodule, and a small label, "RUL nodule." The original film stays fully visible beneath, so the trainee can still read the surrounding anatomy that gives the finding its meaning. The circle's edge is doing quiet work of its own: it tells the reader the finding is the nodule, not the whole lobe. Trainees shown the annotated version locate the finding reliably; the un-annotated version leaves attention scattered across the field.
How it works¶
The overlay is registered to coordinates on the base image and drawn non-destructively above it, so the original remains legible. Each mark does two things at once — it identifies a feature and delimits it, tying "look here" to a bounded region. In a crowded image the overlay is also a quiet act of suppression: by marking one region it implicitly signals that the rest is not the point. What it never does is alter the underlying picture; the emphasis is entirely in the added layer.
Tuning parameters¶
- Mark vocabulary — arrow vs. circle vs. shaded region vs. leader label. Pointed marks locate a point; region marks bound an area. Trade precision of pointing against coverage of the feature.
- Opacity and registration — how solid the layer is and how tightly it binds to coordinates. More opacity reads as stronger emphasis but obscures the base underneath.
- Number of marks — annotate one feature or many. More marks cover more ground but re-create the very clutter the overlay was meant to cut through.
- Label verbosity — a bare pointer, a name, or a short gloss. The more words, the more it drifts into Callout territory.
- Boundary tightness — a snug circle vs. a loose region. Governs whether viewers under- or over-scope the feature you meant.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
It shines when the target is a specific, locatable feature inside a complex field and the audience needs to know exactly where. Its failure modes are the mirror of its strengths: mark too many things and the overlay becomes the new clutter; place marks carelessly and they obscure the feature they point at. The classic misuse is that an overlay is persuasive — a confidently drawn arrow manufactures salience whether or not the feature deserves it, so a mis-aimed mark silently reassigns importance to the wrong place, and viewers rarely question an authoritative-looking mark. The discipline that guards against this is to mark only what the focal intent justifies, keep the base readable, and check that viewers read the marked feature as the point rather than the whole region.[1]
How it implements the components¶
Annotation Overlay fills the locate-and-bound-in-place subset — the components an explanatory layer can genuinely produce:
focal_element— the mark designates exactly which feature in the image is focal.competing_salience_map— in a crowded image, marking one region implicitly identifies and quiets the competitors around it.context_preservation— the layer sits over the untouched base, so the anatomy, terrain, or interface that gives the feature meaning stays visible.focal_boundary— the circle or region edge marks where the feature begins and ends, so viewers do not overextend the cue.
It does not argue why the feature matters or state the next action — that is Callout's focal_priority_intent — and it adds no raw perceptual force to the pixels, which is Contrast Emphasis's salience_mechanism.

Notes¶
An overlay is only as honest as its registration. An arrow pointing slightly off, or a boundary drawn too wide, silently moves the emphasis — and because the mark looks authoritative, that error is the one least likely to be caught. Treat the overlay's accuracy as a first-class quality concern, not a cosmetic one.
