How it works

  • Scope the contest. Name the parties, the prize, and the attritional actions being counted — the operating definition the rest of the panel measures against.

  • Map the prize decay. Model the value of winning as a curve that erodes with time, not a fixed pot.

Tuning parameters

  • Metric granularity — lump burn or itemize by driver. Finer attribution shows where the money actually goes but costs instrumentation effort.
  • Opponent-burn confidence — how much to trust the estimate of the other side's spend, which they may be actively obscuring or bluffing.
  • Prize-decay model — how aggressively the prize is assumed to erode; the softest, most consequential assumption on the panel.
  • Refresh cadence — live vs weekly. Faster refresh catches inflection points but invites overreaction to noise.
  • Runway horizon — how far ahead to project each side's exhaustion point.

When it helps, and when it misleads
