They get a ring-fenced budget, direct access to sales data, and a standing dashboard. Freed from the monthly gate, the squad reorganizes itself weekly — the analyst leads the pricing experiments, the designer pairs with supply chain on a resealable cap — and repeat-purchase moves because the people closest to the shelf are now deciding at the speed of the shelf.

How it works

  • Name an outcome the team owns. A single purpose or metric orients the team without prescribing how to reach it, so the group can organize labor around the goal.
  • Draw the autonomy boundary explicitly. State which decisions are the team's to make and which escalate, so members neither wait for permission on their own turf nor overstep into others'.
  • Back the authority with resources. Budget, data access, tools, and time make the grant real; authority without resources is the archetype's pseudo-autonomy failure.
