How it works

Append-only immutability is the whole point, not a bureaucratic flourish. An editable log is just the current boundary map with extra steps — it loses exactly the thing that makes an audit record valuable, which is the ability to prove what was believed when. Once entries can be silently edited, the log can no longer distinguish a well-evidenced early call from a comfortable retrofit.
