Cadence Reset Retrospective is the ritual that treats a just-passed high-tempo interval as data. Held after the surge, not during it, it reconstructs how the actor's decision cadence actually behaved — which stimuli were answered instantly, which were batched, delayed, delegated, or ignored — and converts that reconstruction into concrete edits to the mechanisms the archetype runs on. Example

A city's emergency operations center has just come through a week-long flood response. Once the water recedes, a Cadence Reset Retrospective convenes. How it works

  • Reconstruct the tempo, not just the outcomes. Rebuild the interval as a timeline of what was answered instantly, batched, delayed, delegated, or ignored — the response cadence, held separate from whether each individual call was correct.
  • Find where the clock was borrowed. Locate the moments the actor ran on the event's tempo rather than its own, and the signals that captured attention out of proportion to their value.
  • Convert findings into design edits. Every lesson lands as a concrete change to a threshold, envelope, buffer, or queue — not a resolution to "do better next time."
  • Reset the baseline. Declare the tuned configuration the new default cadence, so gains carry into the next surge instead of evaporating.

Tuning parameters

  • Trigger — whether the review fires after every surge, on a calendar, or only after a threshold-crossing event. Frequent resets adapt faster but risk churning the design on noise.
  • Reconstruction scope — the whole interval or a few pivotal decisions. Full reconstruction is thorough but expensive and can drown the signal in detail.
  • Outcome-blindness — how strictly the review judges the decision process rather than the result, to keep luck from being rewarded and sound-but-unlucky calls from being punished.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it is the archetype's only feedback path: without it, thresholds and envelopes are frozen at their first setting and the same tempo trap is walked into surge after surge. It is also where tacit, in-the-moment judgment — "we should never have answered that so fast" — becomes an explicit, reusable rule.
