Many claims look corroborated because the same fact appears in a dozen places — but a dozen echoes of one voice is still one voice. Common Source Citation Check follows each citation to what it cites, and then to what that cites, edge by edge, until the reference graph bottoms out — exposing the moment when a wall of apparently independent confirmations all descend from a single origin. Its defining move is to build and traverse the citation graph: it does not grade any one source's quality in isolation, it tracks how sources point at each other, hunting for convergence and circularity. The payoff is the sharpest possible answer to the archetype's core question — are these many independent signals, or one signal observed many times?

Example

An intelligence assessment states that a claim is "corroborated by multiple independent reporting streams." The check traces each stream's sourcing. Report B cites report A. Report C cites B. A partner service's note, counted as a fourth stream, cites an open-source article — which itself cites the same original item A had drawn from. Every branch, followed back, terminates at one original human source. The "multiple independent streams" resolve to a single common origin; the corroboration was circular. The terminal node is then annotated for what it actually is — a single, unverified human source — so the assessment's confidence can be re-based on one signal rather than four. The claim is not declared false; its evidentiary width is corrected from "widely corroborated" to "singly sourced."

How it works

  • Build the citation graph — record, edge by edge, which source each claim actually cites, rather than trusting a summary count of "supporting references."
  • Traverse every branch to its terminal node — follow each path back until it reaches primary evidence, an independent signal, a shared common source, or nothing evidence-bearing at all.
  • Detect convergence and circularity — flag where many paths funnel into one origin, or where citations loop (A→B→A), which repetition disguises as breadth.
  • Annotate the terminal sources — once found, mark each origin's evidentiary status (primary? independent? verified?), so independent corroboration is distinguished from repeated observation of one signal.

Tuning parameters

  • Tracing depth — how many hops back to follow. Stopping early is cheap but risks mistaking a secondary source for the origin; going deep is thorough but laborious.
  • Breadth — trace every citation or a representative sample. Full tracing is definitive; sampling scales to large bodies but can miss the one branch that isn't circular.
  • Convergence sensitivity — how aggressively to call two paths the "same" origin. Loose criteria over-detect circularity; strict ones let near-duplicates pass as independent.
  • Independence criterion — what counts as a genuinely distinct origin (different observers? different underlying data?). This definition is the whole verdict's hinge.
  • Annotation richness — how much status detail to record at each terminal node, trading documentation effort for downstream usability.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it is the definitive test of whether "many sources" are really one — the procedure that catches citation inflation cold, collapsing an intimidating reference list into its true handful of origins.[n1]

Its failure mode has two edges. Chains sometimes cannot be fully traced — an upstream source is opaque, anonymous, or classified — and a half-traced graph invites a premature verdict. And genuinely independent sources can coincidentally converge on the same conclusion, so not every convergence is circular; treating agreement as automatic proof of a common source is its own error. The classic misuse is stopping at the first plausible-looking secondary source and calling it the origin, certifying a chain as "traced" when the real evidence-bearing node lies a hop further back. The guarding discipline is to trace to genuine primary evidence, not the first convincing intermediary, and to distinguish a shared origin from independent agreement before declaring the corroboration hollow.

How it implements the components

  • source_chain_reconstruction — the procedure is this reconstruction: tracing citations and repeated claims backward to the first evidence-bearing source and judging whether later repetition added anything.
  • source_confidence_annotation — once an origin is reached, it annotates that terminal node's independence and verification status, so a diagnosis can re-base confidence on the real number of signals.

It does not test an initiator's assumed advantage by eliciting their account — that is Initiator Interview Protocol's and Network Position Review's assumed_information_advantage_test — and it does not lay out the temporal action sequence, which is Decision Sequence Timeline's cascade_adoption_chain_map.
