Containment Barrier

Barrier artifact — instantiates Sanctuary-Aware Source Control

A standing barrier that denies the target passage into protected or vulnerable zones — buying time and shrinking spread without reducing the source itself.

A Containment Barrier is a physical, procedural, digital, or organizational structure interposed on the routes along which the target spreads, so it cannot cross from where it survives into the zones you are protecting. Its defining move is that it changes reachability, not reproduction — it does not shrink the source or lower the birth rate; it denies passage and holds a line while slower source-side work proceeds. Where a source-reduction effort turns down the tap, a containment barrier catches what is already flowing before it reaches the sanctuary. It is the fastest control in the archetype and the one most easily mistaken for the whole job.

Example

Ransomware is loose on a hospital's corporate IT network, and the reservoir keeps regenerating infected hosts as staff open fresh phishing mail. Eradication will take weeks, but the clinical network — infusion pumps, imaging, the EHR — cannot be allowed to fall; it is the sanctuary that must keep running. Responders drop a Containment Barrier: microsegmentation and firewall rules that sever every route from the corporate VLAN into the clinical segment. The barrier cleans nothing — not one infected machine — it simply denies the malware passage. Illustratively, lateral-movement attempts into the clinical segment fall to near zero within hours, while remediation of the corporate side runs on for ≈3 weeks behind the line. The barrier bought exactly that time, and it protected the zone that could not be lost.

How it works

The distinguishing logic is passage-denial on the propagation graph, not attrition of the source:

  • Interpose on the routes, not the source. The barrier sits on the edges the target travels — the paths between reservoir and sanctuary — and makes them impassable, wholly or selectively.
  • Define an inside and an outside. It draws an explicit line with a protected side, and it must hold on every route; a single open path leaks the whole barrier.
  • Meter permeability deliberately. Most barriers are not airtight — they pass sanctioned flow through controlled checkpoints while blocking the target, trading absolute safety against disruption to legitimate traffic.

Tuning parameters

  • Permeability — from an absolute air-gap to a filtered checkpoint. Tighter blocks more but strangles more legitimate flow.
  • Placement — near the source or near the sanctuary. Near-source shrinks the contaminated area but is harder to hold; near-sanctuary is easy to hold but concedes ground.
  • Medium — physical, procedural, digital, or organizational, matched to how the target actually travels; a barrier in the wrong medium is decorative.
  • Standing vs snap — a permanent boundary versus a temporary cordon thrown up during a flare and lifted after.
  • Route coverage — all paths versus the dominant few. Partial coverage is the classic leak: the target simply routes around the gap.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is speed and decoupling: it stops the bleeding and protects a sanctuary you cannot afford to lose now, without waiting for the slow source-side cure, so "hold the line" and "win the campaign" can proceed on separate clocks. Its failure modes are that it leaks the instant one route is missed, and that an adaptive adversary routes around a fixed line rather than breaching it — the lesson of the Maginot Line.[1] Its classic misuse is mistaking a stable contained state for elimination: the counts stay low behind the barrier, the source keeps producing untouched, and the campaign quietly settles into paying rent forever. The discipline that guards against it is to treat every barrier as a time-buying holding action twinned with source-side work and an explicit exit, never as the victory itself.

How it implements the components

A barrier artifact fills the passage-blocking subset of the archetype's machinery, and only that:

  • containment_boundary — the barrier is the enforced boundary between contaminated and protected space; it defines the line and holds it across every route.
  • reinfestation_or_reinfection_barrier — by cutting the routes the source would travel, it is the standing barrier that stops reseeding of zones already cleared.

It does not reduce or convert the source (source_suppression_or_conversion_path, regeneration_point — Source Reduction Program), map the propagation routes it must cover (propagation_mapSource–Sink Network Mapping), or confirm the target has fallen below replacement (Below-Replacement Confirmation Test).
