Continuity–Rupture Claim Matrix¶
Structuring method — instantiates Continuity–Rupture Regime Diagnosis and Transition Design
Crosses objects and properties with scale, interval, and group, pairing persistence evidence, break evidence, and uncertainty in every cell.
Continuity–Rupture Claim Matrix is the bookkeeping structure that stops a single word — "revolution," "continuity" — from swallowing a mixed situation. It lays out one row per typed claim ("property P of object O changed from A to B over interval T, at resolution R, for group G") and, in every cell, forces both sides of the ledger to appear at once: the persistence evidence and the break evidence, each with its provenance and uncertainty. Where Multi-Resolution Change-Point and Trend Comparison detects whether a series broke, this matrix organizes the many object–property claims into a common frame so their disagreements become visible — it is the difference between running a test and keeping the scorecard. Its defining move is symmetry: no cell is allowed to hold only the evidence that flatters one verdict, which is what lets a name ("same institution") and a reality ("different enforcement") sit side by side instead of one erasing the other.
Example¶
A regional bank is absorbed by a larger one and the press calls it, variously, "just a rebrand" and "the end of the old bank." The integration lead builds a claim matrix rather than pick a slogan. Rows enumerate the objects that might or might not have survived — the brand, the legal charter, the deposit base, the lending policy, the branch staff, the risk culture — each crossed against the property in question and the group it matters to. Filling the cells symmetrically, a genuinely mixed picture appears: the name and customer-facing service persist (continuity evidence strong, break evidence thin), while the underwriting policy and approval authority ruptured on day one (break evidence strong), and the "same relationship banking" the brand promises is uncertain — some segments kept their manager, others were silently reassigned. The matrix does not decide the transition; it makes the Ship-of-Theseus question answerable one plank at a time,[n1] so leadership argues about specific preserved and broken functions instead of a single global label.
How it works¶
- Type every claim. Write each row as object, property, from-state, to-state, interval, resolution, and affected group — never a bare "it changed."
- Fix the invariant. For each claim, name what must stay meaningful across the comparison, so a stable name is not mistaken for functional continuity nor a new name for real rupture.
- Fill both sides of each cell. Enter persistence evidence and break evidence together, with provenance and an uncertainty tag; a one-sided cell is treated as unfinished, not as a finding.
- Read the pattern, not a verdict. Let the completed matrix show mixed regimes — continuity on some objects, rupture on others — rather than collapsing to one headline.
Tuning parameters¶
- Object granularity — how finely the entity is decomposed into rows. Finer decomposition exposes mixed regimes but multiplies cells and can fragment a claim past usefulness.
- Invariant strictness — how demanding the "must remain meaningful" test is. Loose invariants let renaming pass as continuity; strict ones can deny real continuity over trivial surface change.
- Evidence-symmetry enforcement — whether a cell is accepted with only one side filled. Relaxing it speeds the matrix but reopens the motivated-reasoning door the structure exists to shut.
- Uncertainty vocabulary — how expressively each cell can register doubt and dissent. Coarse tags hide genuinely underdetermined claims behind false confidence.
- Group decomposition — how many affected populations get their own column. More columns catch aggregate-hiding-subgroup patterns but enlarge the matrix.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is refusal to average: it holds "formal rupture with administrative continuity" or "aggregate continuity with regional rupture" as a single honest answer, and its symmetric cells are a structural brake on motivated reasoning, because the evidence that cuts against your preferred label cannot simply be left out. It is most valuable exactly when a global word is doing rhetorical work a decomposed picture would undo. Its failure mode is the opposite of the detector's: the matrix is only as good as its rows and its fill, and it can radiate false rigor — a fully gridded, tidy table whose cells were populated selectively or whose invariants were gamed to reach a foreordained verdict. It also does no causal work: a cell can record that a property broke without touching why. The discipline is to enforce cell symmetry ruthlessly, to let the matrix return "underdetermined" rather than manufacture consensus, and to source its cells from the detection and tracing mechanisms rather than from the author's intuition.
How it implements the components¶
change_object_property_and_invariant_frame— its primary output: the typed rows that specify object, property, invariant, and affected group, making each claim testable instead of global.continuity_rupture_evidence_ledger— it is the ledger's organizing structure — the symmetric per-cell pairing of persistence and break evidence with provenance and uncertainty that later revision audits against.
It does not build the multi-scale timeline whose scales and intervals its cells cite — that is Multi-Resolution Change-Point and Trend Comparison — nor does it decide which causal mechanism produced a break, which Process Tracing and Mechanism Discrimination (the classifier) owns.
