A Credit Taxonomy or Authorship Matrix is a fixed vocabulary of contribution categories crossed against the people on a project, filled in to record who did which kind of work. Its defining move is to enumerate the types of contribution up front — design, analysis, coordination, review, mentoring, maintenance, communication — so that credit is allocated across a full palette rather than collapsing onto whoever holds the most visible output. Where a board tracks discrete work items as they flow, this template is a classification: a grid of roles, not a stream of tasks. It answers "in what capacities did each person contribute?" and turns the answer into an explicit, durable credit record.
Example¶
A research group is about to submit a paper, and the usual quiet tension is brewing over author order. In the past, first authorship went to whoever "wrote it up," which meant a postdoc who did months of data curation and a technician who built the analysis pipeline were routinely thanked in an acknowledgment line and forgotten. This time the group fills in a contributor-roles matrix modeled on CRediT: rows for each person, columns for conceptualization, methodology, software, data curation, formal analysis, writing, supervision, and project administration[1]. Each cell is marked for who contributed and how substantially.
Filled in, the grid makes the invisible legible. The technician's pipeline shows up clearly under software and formal analysis; the postdoc's curation is no longer buried. The authorship conversation now happens over a shared, category-by-category picture instead of a memory contest, and the published contributor statement credits maintenance and analysis work that a single "who wrote it" question would have erased. The template didn't measure effort — it named the kinds of effort so none of them could silently disappear.
How it works¶
- Fix the category set first. The taxonomy is defined before the project (or borrowed from a standard like CRediT), so the palette of creditable work is agreed independently of who did it.
- Cross categories against contributors. People form one axis, contribution types the other; the matrix is the intersection.
- Mark degree, not just presence. Cells can distinguish lead versus supporting involvement, so the record captures weight, not only participation.
- Publish the filled grid as the credit record. The completed matrix is the recognition artifact — an authorship order, a contributor statement, or a credit line — not an input to be re-interpreted later.
Tuning parameters¶
- Category breadth — a rich taxonomy catches more hidden work (maintenance, mentoring) but takes longer to fill and can feel bureaucratic; a lean one is fast but re-buries the marginal roles.
- Degree resolution — binary "contributed / didn't" versus graded lead/support/advisory. Finer degree improves fairness but invites haggling over shadings.
- Standardization — a bespoke taxonomy fits the domain; an external standard (CRediT, a RACI-like scheme) travels across projects and resists local politics.
- Who fills it — self-report, lead-assigned, or negotiated. Self-report captures tacit work but inflates; negotiation is fairer but costlier.
- Bindingness — advisory acknowledgment versus formal determinant of authorship or reward. The higher the stakes, the more the categories get contested.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is that it widens the aperture of credit: by naming coordination, review, and maintenance as first-class categories, it prevents recognition from defaulting to the single most visible deliverable, which is one of the archetype's core invariants.
Its characteristic failure is that a taxonomy of kinds says nothing about amount — two people can both be marked under "analysis" while one did ten times the work — so a filled matrix can launder a lopsided effort split into an appearance of parity. The classic misuse is honorary or coerced credit: padding a powerful person into categories they barely touched, or pressuring juniors to cede lead roles, so the grid records politics rather than contribution. The guarding discipline is to pair the taxonomy with a concrete evidence trail for contested cells and to treat degree markings as claims that must be defensible, not courtesies.
How it implements the components¶
contribution_unit— the taxonomy defines the units as categories of work, the palette against which everyone is credited.ownership_record— the filled matrix records which people contributed in which capacities, including shared roles.effort_recognition— the completed grid is itself the credit artifact (authorship order, contributor statement) that converts contribution into acknowledgment.
It classifies capacities but does not watch flow or load: it holds no overload_or_free_ride_monitor — that is Workload Heatmap's — and adds no contribution_context_note explaining blockers, which is Work Log or Activity Trace's job.
