In the moment a system tilts toward criticality, there is no time to reason from raw indicators. The Criticality Stoplight Band exists to make the operating envelope actionable under pressure: it partitions proximity-to-criticality into a small ladder of named bands — green, amber, red, escape — and pre-binds each band to a specific, accountable response. Its defining move is the quantization of a continuous state into a decision. Where a dashboard preserves nuance, the stoplight deliberately throws nuance away in exchange for speed and consensus: when the system is in amber, this is what we do, decided calmly in advance and owned by a named role, so no one debates the model while the situation is moving. It is the operating envelope rendered as a set of pre-authorized moves. The bands are only as good as the actions wired to them; a stoplight with no action behind red is just a colored light.

Example

A specialty chemical plant runs an exothermic reactor that can, under the wrong conditions, tip into thermal runaway — a self-accelerating temperature rise that must never be reached. The control room uses a criticality stoplight band built on proximity to that instability, combining reactor temperature, its rate of rise, and cooling-system margin into one band. Green: normal operation, monitor. Amber: reduce feed rate and increase coolant flow, logged and owned by the shift lead. Red: halt the feed and hold, with the plant manager notified. Escape: trip the emergency quench and safe-shutdown sequence, an authority pre-granted to any operator without waiting for sign-off. During an upset one night, rate-of-rise crosses into amber; the shift lead executes the pre-defined amber action immediately, the reactor settles, and the band drops back to green — no meeting, no debate, no one improvising near a runaway boundary. The value is entirely in having decided, in the cool of the morning, what each color means you do.

How it works

The stoplight's design work happens entirely in advance. It takes the operating envelope and cuts it into a few bands at defensible thresholds, then attaches to each band a pre-authorized action, an accountable owner, and — critically — a distinct escape band whose action is a pre-granted authority to leave the critical regime without seeking permission in the moment. Its distinctive feature is that the mapping from band to action is fixed and owned, not advisory: the point is to remove real-time discretion from a situation where discretion is dangerous. It consumes a continuous proximity reading from monitoring and emits a single, unambiguous instruction. The bands are few on purpose; more colors would reintroduce the deliberation the stoplight exists to eliminate.

Tuning parameters

  • Band count — how many rungs on the ladder. Fewer bands are faster and clearer but coarser; more bands are nuanced but slow the response they were meant to accelerate.
  • Threshold placement — where each color begins. Conservative thresholds trip early and often (safe but noisy); aggressive ones preserve operation but shorten reaction time.
  • Hysteresis — how far the signal must recover before a band relaxes. Wide hysteresis prevents flicker at a boundary; narrow hysteresis is responsive but chatters.
  • Escape authority — who may trigger the escape band and how unilaterally. Broad pre-granted authority buys speed; narrow authority preserves control but risks fatal delay.
  • Action bindings — what each band actually commits you to do. The dial that decides whether the stoplight is a control or merely a decoration.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is decisiveness under time pressure and consensus banked in advance — the fight about what to do happens once, calmly, and never again at 3 a.m. It is also what lets a front-line team act correctly near a dangerous boundary without a model expert present.

Its failure mode is the archetype's dashboard without control wearing action's clothing: bands defined but with no real lever, owner, or authority behind them, so red means nothing when it arrives. The opposite misuse is delayed retreat — pressure to keep operating leads teams to widen the amber and red thresholds until the escape band is reached far too late.
