Practice regimen — instantiates Transfer Scaffolding

Has the learner apply the same structure repeatedly across deliberately varied target contexts, with feedback on each adaptation, so the skill binds to the structure rather than to one setting.

A skill practiced in one setting learns that setting. Cross-Context Practice is the regimen that prevents it: the learner applies the same underlying structure again and again across deliberately varied target contexts, getting feedback each time on how the skill had to be adapted. Its defining move is the pairing of intentional variation with adaptation-focused feedback — not repetition of one scenario and not volume of reps, but a spread of contexts that keeps the structure constant while everything around it changes, so the skill attaches to what is invariant.

Example

An airline trains pilots on engine failure just after takeoff. Drilling the identical scenario breeds a rote sequence that shatters the moment reality differs. Cross-Context Practice varies the context on every run — aircraft weight, crosswind, which engine failed, day versus night, a distracting secondary fault — while the underlying structure holds constant: fly the aircraft, identify, confirm, secure, decide. After each run the debrief centers on the adaptation: "with that tailwind you needed a different decision point," "at max weight the climb margin changed the call." Across runs an explicit adaptation rule forms — what stays fixed, what must flex with conditions.

The result is pilots who execute the invariant under conditions they have never literally seen, because they practiced the structure across variation rather than memorizing one script.

How it works

  • Vary the context deliberately each rep — change surface conditions while holding the underlying structure fixed.
  • Practice the invariant across that spread, so it is exercised, not just the one path.
  • Give feedback on the adaptation move, not merely the outcome: how did the skill have to change for this context?
  • Distill an adaptation rule — the portable statement of what remains and what flexes.

Tuning parameters

  • Variation breadth and interleaving — how far contexts differ and how much scenario types are mixed. Wider, interleaved variation builds better far transfer but slows early gains — a deliberate difficulty.
  • Feedback focus — outcome versus the adaptation decision. Only the latter teaches the rule.
  • In-practice scaffolding — how much support each rep carries before it is withdrawn.
  • Fidelity — simulated versus live contexts; higher fidelity costs more and raises stakes.
  • Blocked vs interleaved — practicing one variant to mastery before the next, or mixing them.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is building flexible, context-robust skill — the standard answer to competence that passes in training and collapses in the field.[1]

Its failure mode is variation without adaptation feedback, which is just noise, and too much variation too early, which overwhelms a learner before the invariant is grasped. The classic misuse is calling mere repetition "practice" and expecting transfer to follow — but repetition alone does not produce it. The discipline is to hold the structure exactly constant, vary the surface on purpose, and always debrief the adaptation rather than the score.

How it implements the components

Cross-Context Practice fills the guided-application subset of the archetype:

  • guided_transfer_task — each varied rep is a structured, coached opportunity to apply the skill in a target context.
  • adaptation_rule — the per-rep feedback distills the practical translation: what to keep, what to change, and why.

It varies context but does not *order contexts by transfer distance or fade support across a curriculum (that is Near-to-Far Transfer Sequence's near_far_transfer_gradient / support_fading_plan), nor does it coach adoption into one real live environment (Implementation Coaching's target_context).*

Notes

Cross-Context Practice varies context; Near-to-Far Transfer Sequence orders context by transfer distance and fades support along it. They compose naturally — vary within each rung of the sequence — but they are different mechanisms, and confusing "varied" with "ordered" collapses the distinction that makes each useful.
