Cross-Disciplinary Causal Review

Deliberative review — instantiates Multiple Causation and Explanatory Pluralism

Convenes causal explanations from several disciplines or stakeholders on one outcome and fuses their partial accounts into a single weighted, uncertainty-marked synthesis.

When an outcome falls across several fields, each field sees a real but partial cause and, working alone, mistakes its slice for the whole. Cross-Disciplinary Causal Review convenes those vantage points on the same bounded outcome — several disciplines or stakeholder perspectives, each stating its causal account — and then does the work the others skip: it fuses the partial, sometimes-competing accounts into one synthesis that names the dominant configuration, the secondary conditions, where the accounts agree or clash, and how much confidence each deserves. Its defining move is horizontal integration across perspectives on one whole outcome. It is not a decomposition of the outcome into lower-level parts to be explained bottom-up, and it is not one analyst's grid — it is the deliberate combination of independent whole-outcome explanations into a single account no one discipline could have written.

Example

A patient has disabling chronic low-back pain that has not yielded to any single specialty's treatment. A multidisciplinary case conference is convened, and each perspective states its causal account of this outcome. The orthopedic surgeon points to structural degeneration on imaging. The pain neurologist describes central sensitization — a nervous system that has learned to amplify pain. The psychologist identifies fear-avoidance behavior and depression. The physiotherapist sees deconditioning from months of guarding. The social worker names job loss and the way disability benefits interact with recovery incentives.

The facilitator captures each account, then maps them against each other: deconditioning and fear-avoidance reinforce one another; the structural and sensitization accounts compete for the same explanatory work — and structural degeneration is weak here, because comparable scans appear in many pain-free people. The review weights them accordingly and writes a synthesis: a predominantly biopsychosocial account, with structural findings as background, high confidence on the psychosocial contribution, and flagged residual uncertainty about sensitization. That synthesis — not any one specialty's story — is what a combined treatment plan can act on.

How it works

  • Convene the perspective set. Each discipline or stakeholder states its causal account for one precisely shared outcome, in its own terms, before any integration.
  • Map agreement and tension. Lay the accounts against each other to find where they reinforce, where they compete for the same explanatory work, and where they simply address different parts of the outcome.
  • Weight, don't average. Assign each account a contribution and a confidence on the evidence — not on the seniority of the person who voiced it.
  • Write the synthesis. State the dominant causal configuration, the secondary conditions, the interactions, the evidence strength, and the residual uncertainty as one coherent account.

Tuning parameters

  • Perspective breadth — how many disciplines are seated. More perspectives reduce tunnel vision but raise the cost and the risk of a diplomatic, unweighted account.
  • Facilitation neutrality — how firmly the chair prevents the most senior or loudest discipline from capturing the synthesis. Strong neutrality protects minority accounts but slows consensus.
  • Weighting basis — evidence strength versus disciplinary prestige. Anchoring weights to evidence is the whole discipline; anchoring them to status is the whole failure.
  • Synthesis form — a flowing narrative or a structured configuration statement (dominant / secondary / uncertain). Structure resists false equivalence but reads less naturally.
  • Uncertainty explicitness — how loudly residual doubt is marked. High explicitness keeps the account honest but can read as indecision to those who wanted a verdict.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it counters disciplinary tunnel vision and produces an integrated, actionable account with confidence marked — the convergence of independent lines of explanation is itself a form of support, the logic of consilience.[n1] Where the analytic siblings each produce a partial artifact, this review is the capstone that turns them into one explanation a mixed group can act on.

Its failure modes are the archetype's most political. To keep the room comfortable, a facilitator can slide into false equivalence, weighting every discipline's account equally regardless of evidence; or into complexity as evasion, letting "it's multifactorial" stand in for a synthesis and quietly diffusing accountability so no factor and no party is ever named. And the most prestigious discipline can capture the synthesis, dressing one specialty's story in the language of integration. The guard is to force explicit, evidence-based weights and to require a named dominant configuration: a review that cannot say which factors carry the account, and how sure it is, has not synthesized — it has only adjourned.

How it implements the components

  • stakeholder_perspective_set — the review assembles the several disciplinary or stakeholder vantage points and elicits each one's causal account of the shared outcome as an explicit input.
  • plural_synthesis_statement — its product is the fused synthesis: dominant configuration, secondary conditions, interactions, evidence strength, and residual uncertainty in one statement.

The review does not lay factors out in a grid (causal_family_inventory, scale_partition, causal_weight_scale, the Multicausal Factor Matrix — its nearest twin in the enumerate-broadly lane, which catalogs causal families as cells for a single analyst where the review fuses whole-outcome accounts from many). It also does not draw the feedback structure (interaction_map, the Causal Loop or Influence Diagram) or test factor removals (counterfactual_probe_set, the Counterfactual Sensitivity Probe).

Editorial Notes

Form Classification

Form family: Assessment, Review & Assurance

Rationale: Cross-Disciplinary Causal Review operates as a bounded evaluation of existing evidence or work that produces a finding or disposition because it convenes causal explanations from several disciplines or stakeholders on one outcome and fuses their partial accounts into a single weighted, uncertainty-marked synthesis.

Independent corroboration: The frozen evidence defines Cross-Disciplinary Causal Review as 'Convenes causal explanations from several disciplines or stakeholders on one outcome and fuses their partial accounts into a single weighted, uncertainty-marked synthesis', so its operative form is Assessment, Review & Assurance.

Nearest alternative: Communication, Facilitation & Learning — The bounded review evaluates and weights competing accounts; convening multiple participants is its method.

Review outcome: Independent reviewer agreement; medium confidence.

Origin Attribution

Primary origin: Philosophy

Origin pattern: Cross-disciplinary synthesis

Present-day reach: Multi-domain

Rationale: The review begins with philosophical accounts of causation, then deliberately reconciles social-mechanism, systems, and statistical-identification traditions.

Related originating lineages:

Review resolution: The review begins with philosophical accounts of causation, then deliberately reconciles social-mechanism, systems, and statistical-identification traditions.

Encyclopedia synthesis: The exact catalogued form synthesizes established practice rather than reproducing a single standard historical label.

Review outcome: Reconciled after independent review; high confidence.

Notes

[n1] Consilience — Whewell's term for the convergence of independent lines of evidence or explanation on the same conclusion. When accounts from separate disciplines, resting on different data, point the same way, that agreement is itself evidential weight; the review is disciplined precisely when it distinguishes genuine convergence from a merely diplomatic listing.
