Mastery rolls up: strong exit tickets and unit tests should aggregate into the course-level reasoning the program promised. How it works

  • Define levels by objective grain. Program, course, unit, lesson, activity — each level carries objectives at its own altitude of generality.
  • Set boundary criteria for each level. State what makes an objective "lesson-sized" vs. "unit-sized," so objectives land at the right rung.
  • Sequence for prerequisites. Order units and lessons so that what a later objective assumes has already been taught.
  • Attach a level-matched assessment and aggregate. Give each level its own measure, and roll lower-level mastery up into evidence of higher-level competence.

Tuning parameters

  • Grain size per level — coarse levels are easy to plan but hide gaps; fine levels track precisely but multiply maintenance.
  • Spiral vs. linear sequence — revisit topics at rising depth (spiral) or teach once to mastery (linear); spiraling aids retention at the cost of coverage pace.
  • Assessment weight per level — how much formative (lesson) vs. summative (course) evidence counts.
  • Alignment tightness — how strictly each level maps to external standards; tight alignment aids accountability but can crowd out enrichment.
