Default Path Redesign changes which outcome occurs by default — when a person makes no active choice at all — so that the do-nothing path becomes the known-correct action rather than its opposite. Its defining move is that it works on the people who never decide: it doesn't lower the effort of choosing the right thing, it removes the need to choose. Where a friction-reduction pass makes the good action easy to start, a default redesign makes the good action what happens if you never start — and lets those who genuinely want otherwise opt out. Because it steers behavior without a decision, it carries an explicit legitimacy obligation: the default must be genuinely in the actor's interest, disclosed, and reversible, or it is manipulation rather than a bridge.

Example

A company finds that most new employees agree they should save for retirement, say they intend to enroll in the 401(k), and then never complete the paperwork — the sign-up sits on a someday list for years. Nothing is wrong with their knowledge or their intention; the default is the problem, because doing nothing means not saving. A Default Path Redesign flips it: new hires are now automatically enrolled at a sensible contribution rate into a sensible fund on their start date, and they receive a clear, one-click way to change the amount or opt out entirely at any time. The known-correct action — saving — is now what happens when a busy person does nothing, and the person who truly prefers not to save still has an easy, respected exit. The behavior moves not because anyone was persuaded again but because the path of no-decision was rerouted, and the opt-out is what keeps it a nudge rather than a trap.[n1]

How it works

  • Find the no-choice outcome. Identify what happens today when the actor makes no active decision — and confirm that this default is the wrong action while the actors already know and endorse the right one.
  • Reroute the default. Set the system so the correct action is what occurs absent any choice: enrolled rather than not, opted-in to the safe setting, scheduled rather than unscheduled.
  • Preserve a real exit. Build a genuine, low-cost, non-punitive opt-out and make it visible; a default without a usable exit is a mandate wearing a nudge's clothes.
  • Set the default honestly. Choose the default that serves the actor's own interest, not the designer's, and disclose that a default is in force.

Tuning parameters

  • Default strength — a soft default (pre-checked, easily changed) versus a sticky one (hard to notice, effortful to leave). Stickier defaults move more behavior and erode consent faster.
  • Opt-out cost — how easy the exit is. The dial trades adherence against autonomy; too cheap and the default barely holds, too costly and it stops being consensual.
  • Default value — what the no-choice setting actually is (contribution rate, safe configuration). Conservative defaults are defensible; aggressive ones capture more benefit but presume more.
  • Disclosure salience — how loudly the default and the exit are announced. Louder disclosure protects legitimacy but slightly lowers stickiness.
  • Scope of application — universal default versus a targeted one. Broad defaults are simpler and blunter; targeted ones fit better but require segmenting people.

When it helps, and when it misleads

Its strength is that it reaches the majority who never decide — the enrollment that never happens, the safety setting never toggled — and shifts them without demanding attention, memory, or persuasion, at essentially zero per-person cost. When the barrier is that inaction defaults to the wrong outcome, nothing else is as powerful.

Its failure mode is that the same power works whether or not the default serves the person, so it is the bridge most easily turned into a trap: a default set for the designer's benefit, or an opt-out buried three screens deep, moves behavior just as effectively and is a manipulation. It also fails silently when the actor doesn't actually endorse the action — a default imposed on the unwilling breeds resentment and reversal, and here the archetype's legitimacy-and-consent boundary is load-bearing rather than decorative. The guarding discipline is the reversibility test: a legitimate default is one a fully-informed actor would keep, so it must be honestly disclosed, in the actor's interest, and cheap to leave.

How it implements the components
