Differentiated Support Pathway¶
Service or learning pathway — instantiates Equity Adjustment
Routes participants to different levels or types of support while aiming at a shared standard or fair access outcome.
A Differentiated Support Pathway offers not one route to the standard but several — light-touch, moderate, and intensive tracks of support — and routes each participant onto the one matched to their relevant difference, all aimed at the same destination. Its defining idea is branching by need toward a common bar: the tracks differ in the support they carry, not in what success means, and a participant can move between them as their situation changes. Unlike a fix built into the shared environment, this mechanism keeps distinct pathways running in parallel and decides which one a given person travels. It is a routing-and-delivery mechanism, so its work is choosing the track and providing the support along it, not defining the standard those tracks converge on.
Example¶
A community college redesigns its introductory statistics course around a shared mastery standard — every student must demonstrate the same competencies to pass — but stops assuming one path fits all. On the model of mastery learning,[n1] which holds the standard fixed and varies time and support, it opens three pathways to that standard: a standard section; a co-requisite section that pairs the course with a support lab for students whose placement signals a preparation gap; and a self-paced track with tutoring for students juggling work and caregiving schedules. A brief diagnostic and a scheduling conversation route each student — the relevant difference here is preparation and time availability, not ability — and students who accelerate can shift up a track mid-term. How it works¶
The distinctive method is branch-and-converge: multiple support intensities, matched to difference, aimed at one standard:
- Define the tracks by support, not by standard. Build two or more pathways that differ in the help they carry — extra time, scaffolding, tutoring, a support lab — while all lead to the identical outcome.
- Route by the relevant difference. Assign each participant to a track using the difference that actually matters for reaching the standard (preparation, access, time), not a proxy for status or ability.
- Keep the tracks permeable. Let participants move up or down as their situation changes, so a routing decision is a starting point, not a tracking sentence.
- Deliver the support along the way. Supply the track's help continuously, not as a one-time grant, so the pathway carries the participant the whole distance.
Tuning parameters¶
- Track granularity — two coarse pathways vs. many fine-grained ones. Finer routing fits people better but multiplies delivery cost and the risk of hardening tracks into a caste.
- Routing basis — what signal assigns the track. A rich, difference-based signal routes accurately; a crude proxy (a single test score, a demographic flag) risks mis-sorting and stigma.
- Permeability — how easily participants change tracks. High permeability prevents lock-in but complicates scheduling and staffing; low permeability is simpler but can trap people below their level.
- Support intensity spread — how far the heaviest track differs from the lightest. A wide spread meets deeper need and strains resources; a narrow one is affordable but may not move the hardest cases.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is meeting people where they are without lowering the bar: everyone aims at the same standard, and the differentiation lives in the support, so the pathway closes gaps that a single default route leaves open. Permeable tracks let a fast-improving participant graduate to less support rather than being held down.
Its failure mode is tracking hardening into segregation. When routing is crude or permeability is low, "different support" ossifies into a lower-status lane that participants cannot leave — the intensive track becomes a label and a ceiling instead of a bridge. A classic misuse is routing on a status proxy rather than the genuine relevant difference, which sorts by who people are rather than what they need. The guarding discipline is to route on the real difference, keep the tracks permeable and alert to lock-in, and hold every track to the identical standard so no pathway is quietly a lesser one.
How it implements the components¶
Differentiated Support Pathway fills the route-and-deliver slice of the archetype — matching support to difference along parallel tracks:
