Environmental Product Declaration Review¶
Document review — instantiates Lifecycle Trade-Off Evaluation
Vets a third-party-verified environmental product declaration for trust and, above all, comparability — because two EPDs mean nothing side by side unless they rest on the same rules.
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) Review takes a standardized, independently verified environmental disclosure for a product and judges whether its numbers can be trusted and — the decisive question — whether they can legitimately be compared with another product's. An EPD is a pre-made LCA summary published to a fixed template, its Product Category Rule (PCR); the review checks the declaration's functional unit, declared life-cycle modules, data vintage, and governing PCR against the comparison the decision-maker wants to make. Unlike the mechanisms that build a model from flows, this one ingests and vets an external declaration — its value is in catching the mismatches that make two official-looking numbers meaningless together, before they reach a decision.
Example¶
A building specifier is choosing between two thermal-insulation products, each with a published EPD conforming to EN 15804 and ISO 14025. The temptation is to line the two global-warming figures up and pick the lower. The EPD Review stops that until four checks pass. First, the functional unit: is each declared per one square metre at a stated thermal resistance over a 60-year reference service life, or is one quietly declared per kilogram — a basis that flatters a denser board that you then have to install more of? Second, the modules: does each cover the same life-cycle stages — A1–A3 cradle-to-gate only, or through installation, use, and end-of-life (C1–C4)? A cradle-to-gate figure and a cradle-to-grave figure are not comparable, full stop. Third, the PCR and data vintage: same category rules, similar data age, both verified. If any check fails — say one EPD is cradle-to-gate and the other cradle-to-grave — the review reports that the comparison is unsupported, halting a false conclusion before it forms.
How it works¶
- Identify the governing PCR. Confirm both declarations were made under the same product-category rules; different PCRs mean different modelling choices baked in.
- Align the functional unit. Reconcile the declared units (convert where legitimate, reject where not), so the two products deliver the same declared service.
- Match the modules. Check that the declared life-cycle stages coincide; note any cradle-to-gate figure as structurally incomplete.
- Extract the caveats. Record data vintage, geographic scope, verification status, and declared assumptions so downstream steps inherit the fine print rather than a bare number.
Tuning parameters¶
- Comparability strictness — same-PCR-required versus adjust-and-annotate. Strict rejects more comparisons but avoids false equivalence; lenient keeps more but must carry loud caveats.
- Module requirement — cradle-to-gate accepted, or full cradle-to-grave demanded. Insisting on end-of-life catches disposal burden-shift but shrinks the pool of usable EPDs.
- Data-vintage cutoff — how old a declaration may be before its background data is treated as stale.
- Verification bar — whether self-declared or only independently verified EPDs are admitted into the comparison.
When it helps, and when it misleads¶
Its strength is catching the single most common EPD error — comparing declarations that are not comparable — and importing rigorous, standardized third-party data cheaply, without building a model from scratch.
It misleads when a compliant appearance is mistaken for fitness. An EPD is only as current as its underlying data and only comparable within its own PCR; a polished declaration can still rest on generic industry-average background data, and module coverage varies more than buyers expect.[1] The classic misuse is setting two global-warming numbers from different PCRs or different functional units side by side and announcing a winner. The discipline is simple and non-negotiable: verify same PCR, same functional unit, and same modules before any comparison, and treat a cradle-to-gate figure as an incomplete story rather than a verdict.

It reads an external declaration and does not render the stage_hotspot_and_trade_off_matrix for inspection — that is Impact Trade-Off Heatmap — nor does it interrogate whether the declaration's shared-burden allocation_rule is defensible — that is Allocation Rule Audit.
